Most of the punters will have had no trouble carrying their wallets and purses home by the end of the first day of the Guineas Festival. The Sunday is again dominated by short-priced favourites. The fairer sex have centre stage for Sunday’s action, starting with the Dahlia Stakes at 2:25. No surprise that having been touched off in the Group 1 Prix de l’Opera on Arc day last year that Jazzi Top is a short priced favourite for victory on the card where she began her three-year-old campaign collecting the Pretty Polly. Several of the others are of interest and it does look like the older fillies and mares could be a very competitive division this term, so I will not be getting back by Longchamp losses yet (unless she gets to 2/1 or better). Fascinating that Fabre has sent Godolphin’s filly Usherette over even though she won on the Chantilly polytrack last time and a Deauville conditions race before that – she was nowhere in Amazing Maria’s Prix Rothschild. After the defeat of the O’Brien hotpot in the 2000 Guineas, will the bookies be looking to take on Minding in the 1000? I still think that she is the one to beat as her Fillies Mile win clearly marked her as one of the best two-year-old fillies and that course and distance win mean no stamina issues. Mark Johnston’s grey Lumiere has to step up in trip but the yard has been exuding confidence and she ought to prove the biggest threat to the favourite other than stablemate Ballydoyle. Although Nathra strips race fit, it is hard to see her reversing form with the favourite and missing her intended return is a concern regarding Illuminate. If there is going to be a long-priced upset, Criquette Head-Maarek’s Midweek is not here just for a change of scenery. The aforementioned Pretty Polly Stakes looks like a terrific heat with at least four or five fillies that could turn out to be worth following during the season if they show some promise here. As First Victory disappointed when handicapped by my money, she will probably pop up here at decent odds now that I desert her. Even Song has done nothing wrong, not surprisingly is impeccably bred and looks an obvious danger. Tiptree took advantage of her experience to defeat Swiss Range last year but John Gosden’s filly now has fitness on her side and went in the notebook with her easy HQ victory. Whether I shovel any dosh on Khalid Abdullah’s filly may simply come down to how generous the bookies are feeling by ten to five, as the current 2/1 is a little skinny.
Two for me today, in the dahlia stakes Arabian queen is my selection. 9 furlongs with a bit of cut should be ideal, and my friend David Ellsworth knows how to get them ready. My other selection in another queen, Sharja queen who finished behind lumiere on her debut but roger variant must have seen something to come straight here and the price is very appealing. I'll keep an eye on Mme cricket heads horse but can't be having any of the balydoyle horses after yesterday's display by pegasus
LUMIERE to light up Newmarket today followed her all last season. Absolute beast of a horse Has great speed, not worried about her getting the mile. MJ is extremely confident about how good she is and will take all the berating
Menghli Khan in the last may come home first -after a blow out last time and a stiffer test , 7/1 looks generous odds
15:40 Newmarket - Ballydoyle/Turret Rocks (dutching, both e/w). (This is a corker of a renewal. These two fillies finished first and second in the Group 1 Prix Marcel Boussac - Criterium des Pouliches, at Longchamp last October, over a mile on good ground in excellent time (fast by 1.96 seconds). Looks like a dry and sunny day at Newmarket, so going should remain good. General form figures for both not bad at all either. So, e/w on each and a small r/f, just in case the impossible happens). Best of luck everyone!

Kesselring is an interestingly named colt in the Salisbury maiden : arguably the finest German General of WW2. He is owned by the son (or grandson) of Kesselring's chief British opponent a certain Mr McCreery, who led the 8th Army in their dreadful slog up the Italian mainland. McCreery later bred High Top and Old Vic. Would not have to be much to win today but the Balding colt may beat him.
Going to hamilton today but will ge keeping a close eye on the big race at newmarket. Will be on lumiere for that one. Got two main fancies at hamilton too... 1:40 - new lease of life 9/2. Two of his three career wins have been at the course and the soft ground today won't be a problem. Still on a winning mark too. Was well beaten by mitchum two runs ago but would have a much better chance against him today. 2:10 - barkston ash 9/4. Not much of a price but think he should be too good for a lot of these. Wasn't in great form towards the back end of last season but has came back this season with a couple of decent placed efforts and is still on the same mark. Has course form also which i think can be a big advantage round hamilton. Singles, doubles and trebled up with lumiere.

next a NM speculative bet, Maid of the glens, but after winter in Dubai may find theUK weather quite a shock
Jet Setting 40/1 Newmarket 3.40 - looks to be revitalised since joining Adrian Kealtey, easily beating a nice type of Dermot Weld's in Creme De La before dispatching a decent field lto at Leopardstown (Alice Springs back in 3rd)...trip will be fine and granted some may have not been ready when she has won this season, I'm happy to side with her knowing she's match fit and will stay 1m. The flat can often be a bloodbath early doors and at 40/1 I'm happy to take a risk each way on her.
Great stuff Gaz good luck with Bainne...you certainly should enjoy a large glass of the stuff after that run
Quite interested in Captain Bob in the 3.00 Newmarket. Bob Cowell might find some improvement with him.
One for today at present Salisbury 4.25 Real Dominion 15-8 Last run at Kempton would have put him just right for today, there is an argument that he is more exposed than rivals, but I feel he was given a mark last season with this season in mind and I expect a very good performance today.
