Just been watching SAFC TV and they have a feature showing SKP's best 100 league goals for the lads. Tonight its the first 25. I have long held the belief that SKP is not only the best striker in my lifetime watching(thats a given) but also the best footballer too. Watching the goals he scored he had the total game. Heading, passing, control, awareness of the game around him, shooting with left or right, volleys, long range shots, tap ins and spectacular over head kicks. He had the lot. Awesome footballer. Interesting too was the amount of goals tee'd up by Micky Gray. I think he too was one of the best footballers to have graced the shirt but somehow doesnt seem to get the same respect he fully deserves. Out of the 25 goals shown, I reckon Micky set 7 or 8 of them up on a plate from left back? Oh for a Mr Gray this season eh? Good interview with Reidy, SNQ and SKP himself as well. For anyone who subscribes=, have a look. Great viewing. SKP. Total footballer and the best I have seen in 35 years in a red & white shirt and still the ONLY Englishman to win the coverted European Golden Boot. What would he be worth in 2011? If Andy Carroll is £35m, then SKP would be £100m+. Easily.
If he was in his prime now, one of the big clubs would snap him up, as there aint that many strikers like him around, but then this could be applied to several others. Best player at SAFC ive ever known.
Lastfag. Remember his last season. He wasn't that interested, man. That has coloured my opinion a bit. He wasn't 100% that last season. x
BBP your right he wasnt but we got a couple of bloody good seasons out of him. Better than judas. As stated by cest could score with either foot, headers, vollies etc. Not little tap ins like db
I think thats very unfair mate. He was amazing for 5 years and had one down year when to be honest, I was sick as **** as well. Any fans who boo this lad should be ashamed and yet I have seen it at the SOL. Boils my piss just a bit though.
He was just incredible, best player we have had in my lifetime by a country mile. I, for one, always gave Micky Gray the credit due mind, i thought he was a cracking player, and a cracking lad. He should be on sky, he's funny as ****.
His last 2 seasons were poor by his standards, nothing to do with Kev in my opinion as he was always having to either track back or come deep to get the ball. Surprised he wasn't snapped up after his golden boot season by one of the big clubs both here and abroad. To get a fit young SKP these days will cost at least 35mil and he'd still be behind Heskey for Engalnd. Agree with the booing bit Cest some people have short memories or, more than likely are just glory hunters. There's two words you wouldn't associate with Sunderland mind. What do you reckon his best goal is then lads? Mine has to be the one against the barcodes at sidjames.com looked like it had got away from him but put it away anyway, although a very close second would be the rocket against Chelsea which dipped just under the bar for the first goal I think it was. As for Mickey Gray a dedicated LB a strange concept that.
I loved one against Bradford, think it was the second of a hat-trick, ball arced over him, flying volley, soccer porn.
need i say more cest skp without doubt the best player who gave me more exciting times than any other in a red and white shirt
He was also a fantastic dancer!! I don't think Micky was one of the best players to grace the shirt though, very good but i always thought Johnston was the better winger and martin scott was a better fullback.
Loved Super Kev ( as my moniker suggests) Mags goal deffo the best, not technically the best (Chelsea goal gets that by a mile) but for the significance and emotion it created. I think Mickey Gray isn't remembered too fondly by a lot of people as he had a reputation of being a bit of a tit. Can't comment on his personality but he was a cracking leftbck!
in my lifetime i've seen some **** strikers, too many to mention, but rowell, gabbiabini (6/7year gap) spring to mind (i've been going since 1976) and then a certain k phillips joins from watford, disheartened by this as i wanted us to sign david connely, an absolute star was born, albeit most of his goals can be dedicated to niall quinn, this is what you can achieve by playing with 2 great wingers, something i can never see happening again, certainly under bruce. Not having a go at bruce, it's just not his cup of tea imo
