And what name did they go under before? Seriously if you are going to sound like some sort of Political expert, at least know what you are talking about. The group called ISIS have been known by other names before.

    Here have a read

I still don't understand how that happened as, as some people believe, we have the best security services in the world. Dream on! And thinking further, this country has had more terrorist bombings than any other in the world. Keep dreaming

We are playing out on this thread, exactly what the terrorist want us to play out here, and in our everyday lives.
They have cause mayhem, we have turned on each other....we have got annoyed at each other

In this (our stupid little forum) microcosm of the real world, the ISIS terrorist today have won

I heard tonight a young girl in Brussels say, that although tonight she will think and meditate quietly ....tomorrow she will join with all the inhabitants of Brussels to show a united front against terrorism. She will embrace her Moroccian, Belgian, Islamic, Jewish, White and Black neighboughs ...and they will stand together to show that division bt terrorism will not win.

We need to do that here too

Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. They didn't exist when Saddam was around. The whole middle east was reasonably peaceful until the invasion. Since then millions have died and the whole region is an utter mess.

This thread was closed earlier. This was due to it becoming overheated and we felt that it needed a cooling off period. It's not nice to see our fellow posters getting into slanging matches with each other. I appreciate that these type of threads are very emotive and posters will display their feelings towards these horrific incidents in different ways. I could go into the old spiel about supporting the same team etc etc but we're all adults and I'm sure that most of our posters on here can understand the thread was in a terminal nosedive and in need of some respite.

Please feel free to continue, I just ask that you try to do so respectively and re-read your post and give it a second thought before hitting the ' Post Reply ' button.

I apologise for my part in the thread 999's. I won't try to justify my posts except to say that I hope it was obvious that the thread become an overspill from another thread. I have tried to keep out of the Brexit debate the last couple of weeks and I just felt there was no need to bring the argument to this thread considering so many people lost their lives and were seriously injured today.

    Apologies to everybody.

I had written the below just as Nines closed the thread. I believe that they are non inflammatory comments, but will happily delete if the Mods see fit.

Except for Al Qaeda. And the Taliban. And Hamas. And sundry Somalian nutters. And state sponsored terrorism from Libya. And Hezbollah in Lebanon. And Saddam committing genocide. Aside from that it was just like Devon in the 1890s.

I agree with your point about the EU Fingy, but this is just inaccurate.

Sorry Beth, but it's precisely because we can have these disagreements that we will win ultimately, it's what makes us different to these totalitarian twats. As I said above, this is catharsis, I understand that it's unpleasant, but if these ****ers were standing in front of us I'm pretty certain we'd forget our technical differences and collectively kick their teeth in. And we would be able to tell the difference between the genuine baddies and those who share a nominal allegiance to a religion or ethnicity etc.

Having said that, no point going OTT with each other lads.

Sorry Finglas but that is simply not true.
I will agree that ISIS name has been created in recent times and i will also agree that a lot of this stuff has escalated since Saddam/war
But to say the middle east was reasonably peaceful before is simply wrong. I have an Israeli who would tell you that that quote is utter rubbish.
Whatever these freaks call themselves this week, they have been around for many years just under a different name. The middle east has been a problem for many years.

I have't read all the comments on this post. The first 2 pages were quite enough to see that it was going to descend into a slanging match and my suspicions were proved correct when I landed on pg 5.

Suffice it to say, whatever your thoughts are on religion, race, colour, we are surely all missing the point. PEOPLE HAVE LOST THEIR LIVES.

Our thoughts and sympathies should be with their loved ones, as mine are.

    RIP.

Thanks for that response fin. There was no need for an apology from you or from anyone else for that matter. These kind of threads are always potential minefields and it will attract all types of poster with a varying degree of comment, ranging from the crass to a very reasonable and rationalised effort to address and make sense of the madness of it all. We understand that and expect it and all that it entails unfortunately.

Usually these threads eventually find their own buoyancy after a while and sort themselves out. Either by way of discussion or by our fellow poster's or Mod interaction. On this occasion it didn't, so we felt that a time-out was probably the best option.

    Well Ellers, I have read the link you posted and I will quote one line for you. It is the first line of the second paragraph and it reads;

"Part of the trouble is that the group has evolved over time, changing it's own name. It started as a small but viciously effective part of the Sunni resistance to America's 2003 invasion of Iraq that called itself Al Qaeda in Iraq, or AQI".

I think your link has scored an own goal for you. Prior to the invasion, Saddam had Iraq under control. ISIS or any other terrorist organisation simply would not have been tolerated. Yes, he committed terrible atrocities against his own people but we are talking about thousands of deaths as opposed to the Millions we are talking today. Yes, there was some trouble in the middle east but absolutely nothing compared to what we have now. Millions of people marched against the war at the time and I think history will show it to be one of the worst decisions ever made by mankind. At the end of all this, we might be talking tens of millions of deaths, who knows.

That's my final word this evening. Good night.

    This thread is titled "
    Terrorists attacks in Brussels "

and people are expressing their thoughts and views on this. I think if you need to just share your thoughts and sympathies for the people who died or injured only perhaps it should be done on the RIP thread!

I think Shefford sums it up perfectly. Sympathies to all touched by this atrocity.

The cartoonists have shown their defiance as you might expect...

Freedom of speech and the ability to express our own views without threat of violence or persecution is what our grand father's and others gave their lives for!

Please show a source that shows the UK having more terrorist attacks than any other country. I find that to be highly unlikely.
You are wrong about our security services, they are among the best, if not the best in the world.
The simple truth is that no one can prevent every attack from every nutter out there.

Unfortunately it's you who are missing the point fingy.
Islamic extremism isn't just about Iraq and was around a long time before the Iraq wars. (One justified and one not imo)

I could go out right now and attack someone or a place I oppose.... I wouldn't be stopped until security forces arrive...they are doing a truely fantastic job keeping us as safe as possible imho...
