I'll support him like every other sod before him but I think Rafa is a bad fit for us. I think we needed something more modern for a start.
Its not my fault we keep getting experts in failure. Honestly when did Rafa last do a good job somewhere? Real Madrid? Failure. Napoli? Meh middle of the road. Chelsea? Middle of the road to failure. Inter? Failure. Liverpool was the last good job he did. Don't get me wrong he has done well in cup competitions wherever he has went. He has a good tactical brain. He just doesn't excite me, and I think he has failed to adapt to the way modern football has changed with the advent of high tempo pressing games. You either join thta party, or go the opposite way like Ranieri and come up with a clever way to counteract it. I think a lot of managers of his generation are struggling with what I see as a fundamental change in how football is played. I'd have preferred a modern manager like say Marcelo Gallardo! I'd have preferred Bielsa to Benitez too. Benitez might be capable to being strong arm enough to squeeze our way out of the relegation zone - however I think we are nailed on. Probably the right type of manager, you either go for his discipline or a feel good coach. Nothing is signed I suppose, it still might be Gallardo...
Dammit ..been monitoring this every 5 minutes for a WEEK!! And that prick Charnley goes and makes the announcement when I am working ...what a deep down malevolant bastard the man is Stage one of getting Manuel on board is complete ...now onto the man himself ..All the paella he can eat ..I mean carry to tables ..will be the deciding factor methinks After years of dissapoint,, dissillusion and sub standard chancers and even though we are upto the eyebrows in **** ..This is good
I share some of your concerns ..We should have gone for Tuchel last summer ...buuuut ..Rafa is head and shoulders ahead of the usual ****e we are offered and told to suck it up and be happy about I really hope the Rafa move is the sea change away from the broken failed despised model nufc have been working with ...that alone would make his appointment worth while
Agree wholeheartedly on the upgrade, his track record is far better than Pardew, Carver, McClaren, Kinnear, Hughton, Allardyce, Souness, Roeder, Shearer - what a ****ing rogues gallery that is. Some have exceeded expectation and proven themselves capable in awkward circumstances.
It's not confirmed Rafa is on board yet so anything could happen. My biggest fear is that this has come too late, we still go down and Rafa leaves. We have a brief glimpse of what might have been if only they hadn't dilly dallied around so much. Fingers crossed we survive and that this is the start of the future being brighter. I cannot imagine that Rafa would come under the ****e terms other managers have been prepared to accept.
I totally agree. This should have been at the start of the 18 day break we had 2 games ago. Stoke and Bournemouth were 2 completely winnable games that we have just thrown away through indecision and poor decision making from 'the board'.
I cannot wait to sit down to a Toon match where every fibre of my being is finally behind the club. The direction is changing, albeit in a haphazard and embarrassing way, and the effort to get in a literally world-renowned manager has to be applauded. Most of us wouldn't imagine Rafa taking this job no matter where we were, but to come in with 10 to go in the bottom 3 - wow. Thoroughly excited by Leicester match now, cannot waiit to see if there's an instant impact though expect him to watch from the stands sadly. The big one is the derby. Oh my goodness, can you imagine?!?!
To be fair though McClaren was given plenty. He had 80m odd, control of transfers, a place on the board to contribute towards the direction the club went in, allowed to change the staff. Basically everything a manager wants. You offer that to most managers and they'll say "where do I sign". Once the other things are in place, it really is all about money - and 80m gives you top 10 in Europe type budget to play with.
