Did it hold Atletico back winning it twice in 3 years? No, it acted as a springboard for them to develop and gain experience of playing regularly, competing regularly and most importantly winning trophies on a big stage.

It's a fair point regarding the one year we didn't play in Europe but it ignores two key facts. Firstly we had one of the finest talents on the planet playing for us, had we been in the Europey that year we might just have won it. Secondly, look at how we performed the year after in Europe. We didn't have a clue. Managing domestic and European games was alien to both management and players. Having seasons out of Europe is a negative for player (and manager) development but most importantly for player recruitment too.

Add to that from a fans perspective... I hardly ever get to Euro away games now but if I do they are by far and away the most enjoyable. Even as an armchair I'd rather have a game midweek than not have one. Wouldn't you? Of course we'd all rather it was Tues or Wed's night but we have to earn the right to be there. We aren't earning it on league form but we still have a glimmer of a chance...thanks to the Europey. That can only be a good thing imo.
I agree with those who say the Europey is bloated and needs to go on a diet. However, for all the reasons you've put, and more, we can't afford not to be in it.
I'm looking forward to us playing Aigburth tonight. <ok>

I also firmly agree with the thought that the euopa has a totally needless round of 32 and this is the primiary issue enlgish clubs have.

the groups are easy... too easy... then you get these extra games crammed in right after christmas, fa cupleague cup and it is what sides hate.

My view is it is entirely for tv money.

I think there should be a HIGHER grade competition and this europa was created simply to give a sop to those countries who had less CL slots.

I would perosnally think england needs to lobby for both comps to be changed

I think

a) CL should see 4 spots for more countries as we have seen germany and italy squabble over having 4 teams and shortly england will do this.

b) Europa should have more early rounds to eliminate the dross.

c) the europa groups stages should be 2 qualify from 4, then go to last 16 mirroring exactly the CL.

d) I strongly would suggest the europa should be moved to tues/weds and games should be on at 6pm before the CL games making a double header style set up. for TV. this would distribute the masses of cash in the comps better.

Maximum of nine games left in the EL.

Twelve games left in PL

One game in LC

That's a maximum on twenty games in three months (or an average of around 1.5 games per week if you prefer). If we can't cope with those demands then we may as well not bother trying for CL!

Harsh schedule considering we've played at most 0.5 games per week so far this season <whistle>

I agree with most that you've said. The easy fix initially in the champions league drop outs not being allowed in. I like the Tuesday early kick off idea. Would make Tuesdays and Wednesdays proper long European football nights

I wouldn't as I don't finish work until 19:30 most nights!

But yeah given that's not the norm it's a very good idea.

I personally love the Europa, always have always will. It's a great opportunity to see teams you wouldn't normally see, good for scouting too, as you get to see how they shape up to decent teams unlike perhaps their own domestic leagues.

brilliant post. totally agree. Atletico are a great example for LFC.

their transfers have been spot on... every time they sold well and bought even better. thats why they won the league in spain.

the point on us not having a clue is what i say too. its like a dog chasing a car. if we ever get cl we will not know what to do.. just bark and make noise? come on bionomial...

I hope we score early.

I'd have thought about 30mins for sturridge here and then thought about next week's game and not playing him.

Origi start?
