I actually agree with you personally..I have a fondness for the league cup that I no longer have for the FA cup..but i considered it an emotional thing so stuck it that wat round lol..
if you look on the board on the main lfc forums, and search up the discussion on the europa league and you'll find lots of fans wanting us to avoid it.
I'd probably rank them the same. Up until a few years ago I'd have put the FA above the EL, but the latter has grown in stature whilst the former has sadly lost its former glory. I know some would put the CL above the Prem, but there's no doubt in my mind that winning the domestic league is the most prestigious prize. Fully agree with the highlighted sentences.
I think there is only one reason the EL is now seen as a bigger thing than the FA Cup and that's the prize for winning it; Champions League football! I've said for years, if we want to see the interest in the FA cup reformed then give it the fourth CL spot. Only the top three in the league qualify as a result (unless one of the top three win the FA Cup too).
Then I ask again, why are they even fans? What does anyone follow football for other than to watch their team play? We all want to succeed, but you can't if you're not even competing.
And I don't get the logic. As much as heart wishes us to .Is it likely we will win the PL in the next couple of seasons. If not then should we by the same logic just not bother with the PL...put out our kids? If its about CL qualification and 2nd to 4th then why disregard the EL? Just don't see the logic of a football club not trying to win a trophy....
i want us to compete at the highest level where t his club belongs to be, the europa is holding us back.(as well as injuries to key players all the time) it's funny the 1 time we're not in the EL the last 6 years, the next season we manage to finish runners up and qualify for CL
We all want to compete at the highest level, but we've slipped a long way and there's no quick fix to get back up there. It's like climbing a ladder and the EL is one of the rungs we have to go past. Learning to compete in the EL will give us vital experience of playing in Europe so that we have a better chance of surviving in the CL if and when we get there. It's not a luxury- it's a necessity.
As I said, we really need a quality striker who can play for us. / doesn't help if they're injured or not good for our formation.
Wasn't saying otherwise. I was pointing out that we have five / six strikers on the books so there was no way we were getting another without one or two leaving. Since only Benteskey was available to play, it wasn't likely any would leave.
Tottenham have been alright in the league despite playing in Europa. Personally I don't see any difference if the Thursday, Sunday schedule to the Wednesday, Saturday etc of the champions league. It's a big competition these days again (ignoring the champions league drop outs) and a win is a massive reward.
I think this reputation grew up as you had teams in it without the squad to cope plus they were far more interested in PL survival due to 7th place soometimes qualifying or "fair play" entrants
If anyone feels europa is a waste of time they show a PROFOUND lack of understanding of the game. 1. If you throw this comp playing kids you are like a dog chasing a car. You'll get to cl and not gave a clue what to do if you ever do catch it. 2. Clubs who play one a week then go to cl do what lfc did under Rodgers. Fall apart under games The europa allows you to build squad. 3. Clubs who don't bother end up as 4th seeds in cl and go nowhere. 5 years in europa doing ok is going to get you at least 3rd seed and maybe even 2nd seed if you do well. 4. Clubs who throw comps are small time and will be small time in all thinking.
Tottenham are ranked 21st in coefficient. Lfc are ranked 42nd. Lfc would be 4th seeds if we got 4th. Spurs will be better seeded and frankly better able to cope in cl. Why. Phackt. Spurs are second and going strong in 3 comps.. they played europa this year.... That's called a developed side over multiple years. They are ready for this. Kane developed last year in europa. Anyone dismissing this needs to wipe their eyes cos they must have mud in them.
Tbf what's been missed in all the furore of the current top 4 is that Tottenham actually have the same number of points as they do most seasons at this stage. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th teams are all well under 2 points per game which is low. In any regular season they could have the same number of points and be 6th. I'm not knocking them, but lets see how they do in both competitions once the EL knockouts start. I agree completely about the Europa League though - not because it's the Europa League but because it's a competition. And surely every football fan wants to watch their team play as many games, in as many competitions, as possible. I just do not get why anyone would want their club out of any competition?
Did it hold Atletico back winning it twice in 3 years? No, it acted as a springboard for them to develop and gain experience of playing regularly, competing regularly and most importantly winning trophies on a big stage. It's a fair point regarding the one year we didn't play in Europe but it ignores two key facts. Firstly we had one of the finest talents on the planet playing for us, had we been in the Europey that year we might just have won it. Secondly, look at how we performed the year after in Europe. We didn't have a clue. Managing domestic and European games was alien to both management and players. Having seasons out of Europe is a negative for player (and manager) development but most importantly for player recruitment too. Add to that from a fans perspective... I hardly ever get to Euro away games now but if I do they are by far and away the most enjoyable. Even as an armchair I'd rather have a game midweek than not have one. Wouldn't you? Of course we'd all rather it was Tues or Wed's night but we have to earn the right to be there. We aren't earning it on league form but we still have a glimmer of a chance...thanks to the Europey. That can only be a good thing imo.
