You need to be quicker with that pause button Tuckin. I make it the scorer is about a yard inside when the ball is kicked.
Perhaps I was exaggerating a tad. But he went SO early before pausing for the kick that the ref really shouldn't have missed it. Also, he'd infringed on the D a bit before getting into the box as well.
The encroachment on the Blanchflower pen was top notch. Going back to the free kicks a brief moment, anyone else seen this piece of insanity?
If we're just posting general free kicks then this is the greatest in the history of football* * And I dont care or believe about the modern perceived wisdom about it, if they knew the rules how would kicking it away to be retaken stop them losing by the dreaded 4-0?
If the ref had given offside then surely the goal would simply have been disallowed. What happened was the ref ordered a retake. N. Ireland scored with the retake which was taken in a normal way.
But if the ref thought N. Ireland had encroached it should have been a free kick to Portugal. Not a retake of the penalty.
I have never seen the opposition awarded a freekick for encroachment by the attacking team when taking a penalty. I seem to remember an English team taking a pen 3 times for encroachment.
I thought the rules on encroachment were as below: 1. If the opposition encroach and a goal is scored it stands. If the opposition encroach and a goal is not scored it is a re-take. 2. If a teammate of the penalty taker encroaches and a goal is scored it is disallowed and the kick retaken. If a teammate encroaches and a goal is not scored, an indirect free kick is awarded to the opposition from where the infringement occurred. 3. If both teams encroach the penalty is retaken. the general point is that when the encroachment occurs, the ball is not in play. with the ball out of play, a free-kick can't be given for something else. the only cases i can think of that get close to being exceptions are when an action to return the ball into play contravenes a rule, such as a foul throw, a goal kick not leaving the penalty area, etc.
