What sort of terrain Horsham? If it's for work and light tow path type rides I'd get a cross bike.

As an old school BMXer I don't see the point in suspension either maybe front suspension forks at the most.

I'd also choose bigger rims - 26" rims are the old standard size - loads of new options, which from personal experience 29" wheels are the way to roll.

If I was getting a do everything bike I'd look at a Cannondale Bad Boy - With Head Shox. As comfortable off the road as on it. Brand new it's double your budget - but probably on budget via eBay. In fact there's one in Basingstoke for £500 ono which for an £1100 bike new is pretty good value for money.

It's as important to get the right size.

Get one of those with an electric motor hidden inside the frame like they use in competitions ( allegedly )

Whatever you do don't buy new….!!…. go and do some research, get yourself measured (pretend you're buying) this is absolutely vital, then go on E bay. I'm a road cyclist, have a MB too and cycles have become a bit like cars, people trade up and invariably look after their bikes immaculately. I've had two amazing bike buys off e bay. For £500 you can get a higher spec bid than buying a off the shelf chinese bike from Halfords...
