Hull City Council have refused planning permission for a 'container cafe' down by the Marina, on the basis that they think it's out of keeping with the area, a Councillor on Burnsy's show just described it as 'monstrous'. Obviously, it's not supposed to be in keeping, it's supposed to be a very modern structure that contrasts with the historic surroundings, so would you have approved it or not?

Before seeing the plans i would of voted NO but they actually look pretty good. I thought it was going to be just some rusty old blue shipping container what you see on industrial estates with cafes in.

When you said container, you immediately think shipping container! I think that looks quite smart. The Marina is a gem in the heart of the city and, not the easiest place to reach. I can't imagine there is a great footfall during the day there. That whole area is being renovated with a mix of refurbished old buildings and new buildings. Just thinking of the fish scales info hub building. I think any thing that attracts to that area is a plus. It is mobile by the look of it so don't see why they can't approve a short team lease to see how it goes. I am sure the owners will soon close if they don't get much business. We are currently in a process of regeneration in our marvellous city and will expect quite the footfall of visitors next year in this area. So anything a bit unusual is attractive. We need to think outside the box and amaze and surprise our visitors apart from the usual council inspired buildings.

The Concept's great, however the colour scheme is hideous and the seating looks as uncomfortable as hell. Also if the image is anything to go by looks like they may have been seeking a liquor licence also? Generator power or mains? source of water; disposal of waste water? How secure are these units? Just for starters!

Agree, anybody who calls it monstrous needs to go to Specsavers!

I go to St Nazaire from time to time (family). They have quite a few of these sort of things along their (2-mile long) promenade. They look fine, get loads of custom, everyone seems to like them.

But they aren't a pioneering, top,10 city with a far-sighted council like Hull.
