Keegan isn't held in highest of high esteem amongst Southampton fans simply because he left for pastures new when Saints were selling season tickets on the back of his being a Southampton player. The view is unfair, in my opinion. Truth is, he wasn't to know. He was getting near to the tail end of his career and he felt his little dream of winning the league with a smaller club was not going to materialise, especially after the Southampton Board refused to spend money to buy a quality player to fill the gap that opened with Steve Moran's injury. Many fans forget that Saints spent more of that season on top of the division than any other club, so Keegan had a point perhaps. We finished 7th, IIRC.

For me he was the most effective striker Saints ever had and I loved him in the Saints shirt. If he'd seen out his career at Southampton I reckon he'd have been pretty much the favourite of all Saints fans, but he was still hugely ambitious and the Saints board weren't really. They were being carried along by Lawrie's fantastic management. It's fair to say that when KK was part of Southampton this club became one of the most fashionable teams to follow, and rival clubs were genuinely scared of playing us. It still boggles me occasionally when I remember him signing for us. Double and current Ballon d'or winner at the time. And England captain, I think. Today's media believe other clubs were slow over Charlie Austin, but Keegan was The Man at the time. Other clubs just couldn't believe what we'd done. Just imagine Messi or Ronaldo coming here. It was that big.

Luckily for me I was 11-13 when Keegan played so those things didn't effect me. I just adores him. Endless energy and enthusiasm and a fabulous player.

    My childhood saints heroes were:

    1. Steve Williams
    2. Kevin Keegan
    3. Alan Ball

Perfect summary, thanks TSS. The moment I heard we had signed KK ranks as one of the best single moments in my Saints supporting life, right alongside Stokesy's goal at Wembley and Rickie's against Scotland st the same place. Just the fact that he signed for us makes him a club legend in my view.

Yep, I can understand that. Though we had so many great players to choose from back then. I can't really pick a favourite because, to me, it does disservice to the memory of any great player who I leave out. 30-35 years later and we're maybe getting back to those heights, albeit far better prepared.

I was stunned. We'd just signed The best player in Europe. Little old Southampton.

Good job Lawrie needed a new light bulb :)

I still have that story on video.

And he won his second Ballon D'Or by a landslide. He was arguably the best striker/player in the World.

Do you have, on that video, the moment he was introduced at the press conference?
I seem to recall Alan Ball sitting at a table when KK made his entrance, around a divider, behind and to Bally's left. My memory tells me that Bally did a classic "double take", seeing KK come into view, then turning back to look at the press, before his head immediately swung back round to look at KK.
Can you confirm that is how it happened, (or if I'm a doddery old fool who makes things up)?

Yes I do. I used to have all my videos on a Youtube account, but after a year or two they stopped playing, so I took them down. But I could upload them again. They're on another PC in the house. Tell you what, I'll turn this one off and go and fire that one up. It's a much faster PC anyway, so things will be uploaded a bit quicker.
