Having an English anthem for sport events is being discussed....should be Jerusalem...a great hymn and one favoured by people already. And no, we don't want some sterile PC song...we want a stirring anthem like other countries.

I have no interest in praying to God that the Queen reigns over us for as long as possible, particularly for sporting occasions so I wholeheartedly agree with a change

Bomb kills 15 people at polio immunisation centre in Pakistan....apparently immunisations are believed to be Western plot to sterilise Pakistani children. Hardly working then, is it? I have no idea what world these radical muslims (inc. IS) think they are going to create with everything banned...half the population not allowed to earn money or create anything (apart from children), the koran virtually the only book (especially for women), and many medical procedures banned. That kind of life may be possible in a world with a low population who can live off the land, but unimaginable in an increasingly crowded world. We can all envisage life like that....everyone leading miserable lives with just a few tough men at the top leading the high life (with frequent changes of personnel as they battle it out).

Complete agreement from me. Jerusalem would be my number one choice, which although it has religious connotations, is really based on the legend that Jesus was taken by Joseph of Arimathea to Britain when he was a teenager and visited Glastonbury. And it's a fantastic song as well.

The only other possible choice would be the hymn "I Vow to Thee, My Country", which is set to Holst's "Jupiter" and is another great tune.

I have no love of jingoism so don't care for anthems.

oops, hadn't seen you post that (see my post below yours) as it was on other page. I whole heartedly agree. It was the final song at my wedding and I could then tell my wife each time I choose to go to an international sporting event or watch it on the television, that I just want to sing my thanks for that wonderful day when I became such a lucky, lucky man <whistle>

Normally I would completely agree with you Godders, but any occasion when one of our national sporting teams prepare to do battle needs a rousing song to get them in the mood. If my suggestions above don't grab you, how about the Sex Pistols' version of "God Save the Queen"?

Not 'arf! I've been saying this since the Scots, Welsh and Irish got to sing their own anthems at rugby matches. Why do we have the dirge which is GSTQ whilst they have stirring stuff ........ Jerusalem or Land of Hope and Glory ....... Shame we haven't got some stirring anthem about stuffing the French, Jocks and Taffs isn't it? :emoticon-0105-wink:

Following on from the above I just got an email from our Parish Clerk which says that all towns and villages in the country are expected to light beacons on the evening of 21st April to celebrate the Queen's 90th birthday.

Any ideas on places you'd all like to set fire to in recognition of this milestone?
