It's also interesting that defence is considered the spelling when defensive, defensively or defensiveness all use the s instead of the c, which I assume is because of the use of both versions of the word up until the printing and distribution of standardised dictionaries?
The use of defense instead of defence however has continued consistently and increased rapidly in the age of computers due to auto corrects on so many things not recognising it as a mis-spelling due to being American or accepting both versions of the word.
Given its widespread use throughout English speaking countries I'd consider it an acceptable spelling
