The game in question was in fact a replay, which we lost 1 - 0, I believe after extra time.

No floodlights in them days, so what makes the crowd even more amazing is that the match took place on a Wednesday during the day - not much activity in the yards or down the pits that day, eh?

Me da went to school a short distance from Roker Park and was consigned to occasionally running to the ground for updates. Modern day version of Teletext, I guess!

Really? ... Aye, that's a bit strange and I'm sure the local area ground to a halt. 70 odd thousand though eh, bet the atmosphere was electric!
 
My grandad was at the derby game, he was 5'7" and he said his feet never touched the ground as the crowd literally lifted him off his feet in the crush.

My late father was there....

I was at the home cup game against Man U at Roker Park in the 1960s..
We had drawn 3-3 at Old Trafford with Johnny Crossan dominating midfield.. (our second strip was light blue in those days too..)

The replay's official attendance was 60,000+ but several gates were opened and many more flooded in, and again many more left outside..

Another magical and noisy night at Roker Park....

I mis-read this and though it said CEST not crest!! Was thinking Cest was older than that

My dad always tells stories about this night. Im assuming this is the game where the gates broke at the Roker end? People sitting around the edge of the pitch etc etc

He has always maintained that the crowd that night (unofficially) was the biggest he had ever seen at Sunderland. True he wasnt old enough to be at the Derby game mentioned in this thread.

I believe in those days it was standard practice for shops/factories etc to have half day closing on Wednesdays..

My dad at that on and he said miles more that 60000 due to the gates being opened. His feet didn't touch the ground for the whole game.. He's never been back to the footie he was soo freaked out by the crowd. Always more of an egg chaser anyway.... Oh the shame
