Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp surprised that Dejan Lovren isn't as terrible as the fans suggested

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp admits the perception he was given of Dejan Lovren on arriving at Anfield has not matched his own impressions of the defender.
Lovren has struggled to convince the Liverpool supporters that he is a £20m player, since arriving from Southampton in July, 2014.

The Croatia international, 29, endured a difficult first season on Merseyside and, not helped by a number of injuries, has started only 10 Premier League games this season.

But Lovren returned from a knee problem to partner Mamadou Sakho and help Liverpool keep a clean sheet against Premier League leaders Leicester City last Saturday.

That was the first time Leicester have failed to score in the league this season and Klopp has been happy with what he has seen of Lovren so far.

Lovren took a while to settle in at Anfield

Klopp said: “I heard the supporters were not too happy with the performances of Dejan when he came in.

“I can’t say anything about this. Since I came here he gets better and better.

“He has shown he strong he is and for me I’m not surprised about this. I knew about his quality.

“I was surprised a little bit surprised about what everybody told me about him.

“I am happy for him that he can show this now. It’s very important that he stays fit and can train and we defend as a team like we did (against Leicester) so it is easier for the centre halves.”

His time at Liverpool has obviously been tough on him, since he's apparently aged to 29 despite being born in 1989.

Oh I agree he will never be worth that fee but that's a bit irrelevant now. Can't be undone so what can we get out of him in our team is the question.

My question was who did the hatchet job and who did Klopp talk to to get a read on what he had. I presume he did this before signing for us

Presumably he was looking at lovern as someone he could not rely on at outset.

Jürgen Klopp has insisted further hard work and a growing belief will help Liverpool to grind out more results in the future when things aren't going their way.
The Reds were made to battle for the three points as they defeated Sunderland 1-0 at the Stadium of Light on Wednesday in the Barclays Premier League, with Christian Benteke's goal and a dogged defensive performance securing the victory.
Klopp was pleased to see his men fight for the win when met with obstinate opposition, and believes that bodes well for their development as a team.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of the trip to West Ham United, he said: “It’s always a test and we always have to be prepared to get good grades in the tests we have. We need points, that’s clear.
“But first of all, you have to fight for the result and that’s the biggest change in the last two games. Until then, we won our really good games where we were really good but we were average when we lost. That’s not how it should be if you want consistent results.
“We took these points, very important points, in a very difficult game. That’s very important. We defended well and we had opportunities.
“You can always make your life easier in games like [Sunderland] when you take one of your first opportunities. I think the biggest opportunity for us came when Phil [Coutinho] played a pass to Roberto [Firmino] in the box and he couldn’t save the ball.
"It was one touch and the second touch was with the knee. If he could control this ball it was a big, big chance and you can make an early goal in this game.
“For us it could make life easier but if you don’t do this you have to work, defend and to switch [the play], speed up, slow down - all the things for the special moment [when you score]. So it’s very important in games like this that you win. It’s important for us that we don’t wait for the perfect day but that we work for the perfect day.
“If you always are prepared for a difficult game, sometimes you will find an easy game. But if you are always waiting for the easy game, you will never find it. That’s an old football rule and yesterday we worked again for it and for us it’s very important."
Benteke was once again the match-winner thanks to an instinctive finish inside the box, and the boss has been pleased with his No.9's contribution in recent outings.
He added: “When I spoke to Christian after the game, he made the deciding goal in this and that’s the best thing a striker can do. But he can play better and that’s for everybody.
“Christian was there again for the decisive moment and could have scored the second goal. Everybody saw and it’s not usual that you have two situations like this in four days [Leicester and Sunderland], so it’s normal that you are not free at the moment when you think about it.
"It’s too long to run [at goal] and you think about the last situation, he tried to do something different. Last time [he went for the] left side and this time the right side, both times [it was the] wrong side.
“But I think next time in a situation like this he will make this goal and score, so it’s okay for him and it’s okay for us.”

He can score all the goals in the world but if he doesn't perform well in open play and contribute to the team build up, I'm sure he won't last here.

Lol all the goals in the world was slightly exaggerated. But his rate is 1 in 2. That isn't enough for a player who doesn't create his own chances or for others or work hard for the team.

I think the part in bold has been the bit that's missing though, it's all been about Benteke.

That then leads to a few on here probably defending him a little more than he deserves as Coutinho, Firmino etc are getting a free ride even though they've been just as ****!

Difference is Coutinho is our most talented player, just massively inconsistent to the point I think he thrives on us having a Sturridge type striker ahead of him. As for Firmino, I don't doubt there is quality or style to suit our team, he just lacks effort entirely. As for Benteke, I just don't ever see his style suiting our team and then when you add his lack of effort, he has nothing going for him.

You do realise that in the second half against Sunderland, Benteke was your most creative player. He also made quite a few runs back to the centre circle to get the ball and start attacks because none of your other players were doing anything.

I've just had a right laugh on this thread.

I was reading the Klopp quote and liking the working for a perfect game not waiting for it but then Jimmy posted a right Howler about 1 goal in 2 not enough....

The entire prem searches for a striker with a rate that good... hilarious.... just let it go Jimmy.

The difference is, those strikers offer more than just goals - which is the point I was making, and it's what Klopp was alluding to.

You need to contribute in more ways. Simple.

Ian rush... **** player really loads of goals

Robbie fowler couldn't control a ball or pass it to save himself.

Michael Owens idea of ball control was similar to Robbie Keane. Kick it 5 yards that way and chase it down before a defender can get to it.

Liverpool have a long line of strikers who never hit the technical heights but did their jobs quite well.


Poor Benteke so unappreciated
