Don't you need to be qualified at some level in football to be a scout, or is it like photography these days whereby anybody with a mobile and a camera is a photographer?

I've mentioned it before but that was genuinely something Assem Allam said around the time he sacked Barmby. That he was going to stop all our scouting as well because there's plenty of info about any player on the Internet.

This is really bothering you isn't it?

Ok, let's clear some things up.

Firstly, I'm not being paid to do this, it's a favour to me from somebody within the game already. I'm really shadowing this person, basically seeing what it's all about as the commitment level is massive and with being a teacher, time isn't something I really have. It'll be good to pick their brains, find out how they hear about players, what leads up to a scouting mission (how do they decide they're worth looking at?) and what you need to look out for when watching the player. All the info I've prepared might be totally irrelevant (although I imagine the key facts are probably handy). The bloke I'm shadowing is currently employed by a Championship club, he's spends a lot of time scouting Scandanavia (which might be of interest to Febbos and obviously to myself) and he's brought a few over here in his time. It's not my place to give names or clubs, it could ruin this slim shot I've got.

Secondly, Finland are playing Iceland on January 12th. It'll be ****ing cold, obviously. But they're made of stronger stuff over there, I'm sure it'll be fine.

You don't need any qualifications to be a scout, you just need a good eye for the game and know how to spot a good footballer. I reckon I can, hence why I'm having a go. It's tough to get into, hence why I'm so grateful for the opportunity.

He has already signed a pre-contract with Kaiserslauten (they've already printed his shirt), I checked the lads twitter page. Presumably we're off to watch him for some future reason, who knows. In my defence I did this pre-report about a month ago and I've just copied and pasted. Still really looking forward to it though!

Says everything about the lack of knowledge Allam's have. World of difference between seeing a player in the flesh and watching a bunch of videos, relying on Opta stats or, even worse, googling the bloke. If you go to scout a player a proper scout will focus just on that player during a game, how he reads a game, how vocal he is, how he reacts when the team is in and out of possession, his body language, as well as what foot he favours, how many k he clocks up etc.

Good idea, I'll look into it. Obviously I'll have to leave some things out but I'll do my best.

We aren't in your day, you need detailed dossiers on every player. Even at Conference North level the scouting principles are the same. I don't know what you mean about not putting up a link, what more do you want? I'll do my best if you want any more like.

I don't disagree, but if you know how comprehensive a fully paid up set of opta stats are, the stats from a game or two would probably tell a professional more about a player than us mere mortals would see from the stands in a 46 game season.

I think they record everything from the size of a players kit to the exact location he's pointing to.

Again read the book i mentioned, a lot of clubs got sick of relying on the advice of a scout who provided little info other than he's got it, sign him.
The Brentford chapter will kill Roo. They dont care if a striker scores, its how the team does when he's playing...
Bit like the hold up play me and you keep going on about, thats non existent for us.

If you come to this thread without reading the other one you mentioned then your story doesn't make much sense really, now you've explained what you are up to good luck with it all
