Schweinsteiger probably did originally mean someone from Schweinsteig. But steigen can also mean mount, so the idiomatic translation of Schweinsteiger is pig ****er. In German it’s embarrassing and funny. That’s right. David Cameron ist ein Schweinsteiger.
Anyone watching United - Wolfsburg, the German team have some good young players on show, many German. Draxler is quite a player indeed. €25m odd for the lad but he really has it all in his locker at 22. Compare the young English talent on show from United tonight (Jesse Lingaard?) to that on show from Wolfsburg and you can see how far England have to go still IMO. Wolfsburg play similarly to how we do actually, lots of interchange from the players up top, breaking with pace after putting pressure on the opposition. Kane is perhaps more of a fixed striker than they are operating with tonight but it is still an interesting comparison.
Draxler's probably more equivalent to someone like Barkley than Lingard though, to be fair. They're the same age, similar number of caps and have played a similar number of club games, too. Lingard's never really had a run in any side.
Yeah I wasn't comparing them as individual players really, though Draxler and Barkely is more of a like-for-like comparison you're quite right. I was more trying to make a general comment about the dearth of English players, particularly young ones, who are rightly considered a major deal in the teams they play for in the CL in the way that Draxler is at Wolfsburg, and was for a few years at Schalke too for that matter. I don't think there really are any. Perhaps Raheem Sterling. That is about it I think.
That's some defensive header! Keeper with no chance. And they've gone straight down the other end and scored!
I can't decide if I want you in to raise the England coefficient, or out because I hate to deprive you of sharing the joy of the Europa.
Piss poor defending by Utd. A keeper of De Gea's class deserves a lot better. He doesn't look a happy bunny!...
United Just about the easiest group they could have hoped for too. Depay's making Sterling look like a bargain!
