Given what happened in Paris, I know our thoughts must be elsewhere today, but, reading the review of the England game (and I didn't bother to watch) it sounds like Woy hasn't learned anything other than the fact that his team are simply not good enough to compete with top teams from the rest of the world. He seems determined to play Jones, even though he's clearly not international standard and the tactics seem naive. Looks like we're worlds away from ever doing well in an international competition! Does anyone think the England/France game will go ahead? Is there any point or would to cancel it be playing into the hands of the terrorists? I imagine security services are having nightmares already.
Obviously England have their strengths or we wouldn't keep qualifying for tournaments so well, but we are a good, dependable side rather than a top side. Roy can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear....all he can do is try and make us hard to beat....the best sides don't always win tournaments. Not all Roy's fault....we just don't have the players. Usually I think things should just go ahead after terrorists attack, but perhaps the French won't think this is appropriate in this case. And security forces may be worried by it being an attack at a sports event and be worried another is planned. Have to wait and see. Very sad times.
First of all, I don't think the France - Endland game should go ahead. Not to give the scum that committed these atrocities any kind of victory, but simply out of respect for those that died, and to give the French people a chance to grieve. Now, as for England, they were rabbits caught in the headlights last night, although they did manage to put together a few decent passing moves. Spain themselves are a shadow of their former selves, and only really began to threaten our goal after Costa went off. But as has been mentioned, it was our inability to keep possession that let us down. Sterling and Lallana need to be dropped and told to improve their concentration, and that they are supposed to be part of a team. Barkley is promising and will be a great player. Phil Jones is a donkey, although Smalling was OK. Saints bias aside, Bertrand was terrific, and Kane should have scored from the excellent cross he put in in the first half. A thoroughly depressing evening all round, and one where football became completely irrelevant.
Spot on about England, and about Spain as they definitely improved after Costa was taken off. Spain's performance tonight just illustrates further how brilliant and important Puyol and Xavi were to them. They were the backbone for the best part of 10 years.
You referred to Phil Jones as a "donkey" Chlco. Is it just me, or do others share the same view that the all white kit made England look like a team of "donkeys." Besides which, white makes a team look so anaemic.
If the French are ok with the game going ahead that is what is important. No doubt it will be an opportunity for the players (and fans) to show their respects.
I agree, but if it is going ahead, the only justification for it is to use it as a big demonstration of solidarity with the French people. The England team and staff, and all the officials should learn the words of the Marseillaise and sing along when it is played.
I was just gong to suggest the same thing. I may even email the FA and suggest they print the words off and put them on every seat. What a great show of support that would be if the world saw 80,000 Engalnd fans singing the Marseillaise!
