I just don't think this is a fair view on the club. If a top player wants to leave, they eventually will. We can't keep them if they don't sign a new contract, so If we don't cash in, they go for nothing.

I think the problem is in what the fans expect and want.

This is not the first season that a lot of fans thought this; it happened last year and everything clicked. This year it is the same thing and it may click again, it may just not click and we may have a struggle.

My view is that too many of you are being unfair on the club. Fine that's your opinion and your expectation, but I believe it is unfair on them. They have their model, we all know that model, yet people continue to bitch and moan about it. Every club has their way of doing it and they don't all work out. Spuds spent a gazillion quid the other year and are now selling all those players off cheap. Liverpool are having the piss taken out of them because half of last year's signings have gone. Man Utd spent 57m on a player last season and sold him this season for 12m less and have had two relatively **** seasons.

This MAY be our first season that is not on an upward climb and day after day I read people bemoaning the Board. Jeez we've really been spoiled in the last few years and I know I'm going to get people playing the "as soon as someone moans about the club... Happy clapper... It's an opinion..." line, but I'm going to stand up for the club when I feel I need to.

I really believe fans need to accept that we have a model that is going to try and move the club forward over a period of time in a sustainable manner. I admire them for that and will stand by them while they try it.

Come on you Saints.

Ps. Craig I replied to your post, but this isn't aimed solely at you, but just happened to be one of those posts that sits in with a view others. Hope you don't mind.
Great stuff FLT. Perspective and reason. <ok>

Ok, since we've been back in the premiership. How can we ever build when we are losing 3/4 1st team starters every season? Last season we replaced players with quality, this season selling 25 million pound players and replacing with 4/5 million pound players. I hope you right, but to lose ****yama now with no time to replace would be disastrous as both starting CM gone within weeks of each other.

Which "3/4 1st team starters" have we lost this season? Remember that Toby wasn't ours.

Vin

Sadly though you only progress by moving continually forward............it surely can be argued that we seem to sell high but buy low. It doesn't appear that we have replaced the standard we lost. No other club is having the same problems with players leaving/wanting to leave, as Saints do. Admittedly it is early days for the new players to show their metal it is just my opinion though that I have seen nowt that particularly excites me. Sorry that is just how I see it at the moment.

You could have written the same paragraph last year. And we moved forward.

It's easy to look back with 100% hindsight and know that Koeman, Pelle, Tadic and Mané would come good but this time last year were you optimistic?

Morgan, Clyne. Koeman and Reed thought Toby was to be ours, and of course the possibility of losing VW.

I don't consider someone we never owned to be someone who left.

Ref Wanyama, remember Julius Caesar "Cowards die many times before their death; the valiant taste of death but once". Suffer the pain if he leaves, not before.

We loose our best players for one very simple reason....money
We are one of the lowest payers proportional to the remainder of the prem clubs...simples.
We can attract half decent foreign players from good foreign teams but if they prove to be up to the task they can move onto most other clubs and double their money.
Why would a player want to join Spurs?
Are they a champions league team...No
Do they win trophies....No
Do they pay considerably more than us....Yes
End of discussion

Perhaps we should tight them then?

(Sorry, 'loose' is my big bugbear!)

Is he another Shane Long (improved version)? I'd like him, but wonder if we need someone more creative? I'm not saying I wouldn't take him, but just wondering what it is we need.

I like the way this discussion is happening in the same thread where we're highlighting how we are one for the lowest payers in the league. He's a Spurs or Newcastle man.

I know VVD is primarily a CB, but I hope we put him in defensive midfield, as I am still of the opinion that most of our problems stem from the middle of the park.
And I am most definitely still of the opinion that we are crying out for a "proper" attacking midfielder to compliment whoever we play as defensive midfielders.
At the moment we have Davis continually playing out of position, but we still need better than him when he is played as attacking midfielder.

We have needed that No10 player since we got to the Prem.

The same reason Liverpool lost Sterling then. And Suarez. Same reason Villa lost Benteke and Delph. Same reason, not so long ago Arsenal lost Van Persie, Fabregas, Nasri etc.

Also, same reason half our squad came to us in the first place.

Apparently Sunderland are trying to seal a move for Adrian Ramos from Dortmund for about €10m. Quality player and i mentioned we should be in for him last summer. Exactly what we need by way of extra firepower. Big, fast, strong, excellent header and can run at defenders.

My final one for tonight, trying to show our Board aren't bad and we aren't the only club.

Man Utd - about to lose one of best keepers in the world and not even been playing him.

Spurs - can't win a game

Liverpool - loan out millions of pounds worth of players they signed a year ago, which was the year they lost their best player. They also lose their long standing captain and club idol. They also sell their best up and coming talent

Arsenal - only scored three goals and two of them own goals

Chelsea - conceded 9 goals in 4 games and they haven't even lost any first choice defenders!

Of the teams that finished above us last season, only City have started well. It may just point to the season being young and several team haven't settled down yet.

Night.

Noticed that signings have to be by 18-00 hrs on deadline day. It's usually much later, isn't it?
Fran, from my (limited) knowledge/memory of these things, the deadline day is usually the end of a calendar month. The last day of August this year (ie tomorrow) is a Bank Holiday. This probably means that financial transactions can't happen, so rather than close the window at midnight on 31st August, but with no 'last minute' transfers, this window closes on a normal working day.
It could still close at midnight, just to raise the tension, but maybe the people that decide these things want to watch a TV programme after 18:00, and can't Sky Plus it.

I guess this time last year I was optimistic......The opening few games last year you could see the talent if not the quality........So yes there was optimism. This year though, sorry, for me at least, I have been disappointed in what I have seen. Of course I hope they improve and start to blend...after the recent start the only way is up so they haven't very much choice......!!!
Although none of the above explains why other clubs are not having similar problems with players leaving/wanting to leave. Other perhaps those that are being relegated and wish to stay in the premier. I need to be convinced that the changing room is as happy as everyone makes out?
