Bet if Lambert had still been there most of that money would've been slurped up by Lerner.

It's hilarious really poor Lambo, I think he was unsettled by Brandon Rodgers getting the Liverpool gig back then hence why he buggered off to Villa thinking he'd get to play with the big boys and we all know how that ended.

I do feel just a teeny weeny bit sorry for him.

The net spend for this summer is still significantly lower than for each of the three seasons under Lambert though - he had a net spend of around £50m during his time there according to that first article Rob linked to, he only brought in £5m in player sales

That's a rather odd comparison though isn't it?

Why? I think it's perfectly valid - the inference is that Sherwood is being given far more money to play with than Lambert was, and all I've done is show that the Benteke and Delph sales have distorted that somewhat <ok>

Except you're taking three consecutive seasons all together.

Lambert's net spend per season (if we're going to trust that website) was approximately (12/13) £24m, (13/14) £16.5m and (14/15) £9m

That's a clear downward trajectory. Now it looks like they're going back upwards.

But aside from that I don't think you can purely look at transfer fees. There was a clear policy with Lambert that he needed to get high wage earners off the books. They've now signed six players for more than £7m each, who (at a guess) are likely to have quite high wages. Looks like a pretty clear change in policy direction to me. Admittedly, that might be partly because they've successfully offloaded a load of high earners, but then that was down to Lambert in the first place.

Sorry, I may be being dumb here but Sherwood's net spend this summer is around £5m isn't it? How is that an upward trajectory?

It certainly does tend to help a manager's spending power when they can offload one player for £30m+

Just don't see how you can compare 3 season total vs one. I'm not saying it's not a valid statistic but it's just a rather odd one to use.

You could take the avg (although I really hate averages) of 3 to compare to current.

As you say sales have distorted it somewhat also increased PL TV revenue too. I still think imho that had those sales happened under Lambo he would not have gotten the backing that Sherwood has this year.

Other than that it's a waiting game to see what happens next summer

I also don't think Lambert would have been allowed to go out and bid for these kind of players. He was restricted to players like Westwood and Lowton from Crewe and Sheffield Utd. These players are miles and miles about that kinda money. Is funny :D If you sh*t on people, expect to get sh*t on :)

I didn't total the three seasons, I looked at each season individually - net spends of approx £24m, £16m and £9m as Rob says, each comfortably higher than this summer so far. The part in bold is merely conjecture, we'll never know the answer to that so it can't really used in an argument.

"looks like" as in if they're in for this guy that will probably cost them £15m.

But as I said it's not just about pure spend - what's going on with the wage bill?

I simply don't know. But on the face of it, they were slashing wage bill costs, now they seem to be increasing them. I can't be sure of that, but it's enough for SSN to do an article on it, so I'm hardly the only one that sees a cosmetic change.

I know what you're saying, because of the big sales this season, it takes their spending down. Which is true, But Lambert had to force out highest earners in his seasons anyway. As long as you included the sales in the 3 Lambert years, as well as this season. Then fair enough. I still don't think, with the wages these new players must be on, I don't think Lambert would have been backed for them, in my opinion.

Randy is realising that if Villa were to fall out of the Premier League it would cost him a fortune.

He is desperate to sell though.

He's never going to get rid of it at a price he's willing to accept, let's face it there's only so many people out there that A have the money & B are interested.

The old saying. "You need to spend money to make money". Last few seasons, Villa have looked such a depressing club. Not an attractive buy.

Oic I thought you were comparing all 3 seasons to this season. What about sales under Lambo as well? Suppose biggest unanswerable question is who was on what wage then & now.

Pmsl the only way you could make Villa more attractive is to pick it up & move it far away from where it is, urgh, football matters aside lol

The figures I quoted were all net spend, purchases minus the sales. Lambert only sold about £5m worth of players, though I guess that suggests he had a **** squad to start with.

Wages are definitely much higher now, granted, but then so is the TV revenue this season. I can see where you're coming from, I just don't think it's as black and white as saying that Lerner is throwing loads more cash at Sherwood to spend than Lambert as there's more to it than that <ok>
