Is this loan system the way to go? I know we have some successes in the past but don't we need to bring in longer term prospects if we are to build for the future. The game of football is fast becoming a shifting sand situation and we need to build on more solid ground if we want to build for the promised land.

Loans system works well, it means we can still get decent cover for a thin squad without being held to ransom by the greedy agents...

Good point but surely at some point we need to boost the squad with contract players. It would be interesting to see the stats throughout the league to see where loan players play a big part in a team's structure. Consolidation should be the key this season and if that is to include loan players then so be it.

We need to use the loan system because we ****ed up on the transfer front. It might not be the best way to build for the future, but it's the best way for us to survive the division, and that's ultimately what we need to do this season.

I always remember a certain Mr Andy Cole who came to us on loan, then we brought him for peanuts but unfortunately we know we ****ed up on his sale.

Until we know how to succeed in the transfer market we have little hope of moving forward. Our record, whether it be coming or going, is quite poor and some major gaffes have happened along the way. Time to smarten up I think.

Apparently some other big teams are also interested in him, so I cant see this bearing fruit unfortunately.

I do always hear this one, and I suppose it's notable as he went on to become such a reputable player, but I don't think we ****ed up as badly as some think. The cash value of the transfer to Man Utd was £6m (the extra £1m was Gillespie), and most sell-on clauses are based on profit (so minus the £1.75m Newcastle paid us). That leaves £4.25m, so any sell-on (if we take an average of 10%) would only have given us 425k. Admittedly a lot more back in the day but I'd argue it's far from our biggest financial mistake in recent years.

Our biggest mistakes with Trundle imo were playing him as a lone striker, target man and a left winger! He should have played in the attacking mid/striker role, just behind someone bigger.Would have thrived there imo.

I always liked Trundle when he was here. I think he struggled with the move up to the Championship, but he netted some important goals for us. Ultimately, I think GJ just didn't like him, and when he came back out of shape his time was up for us.

Trundle was on his final fling with us.
Very skilful but out of his depth.

Trundle was a very skilful player on his day. I agree that he didn't get half of the game time he should have.

    Trundle...

Not just him, there is a very long list of strikers who didn't perform at The Gate who did well both before and after they were with us. A really good example of this was Chris Wood, who was slated as being useless and then went off and scored regularly and was deadly for Leicester

There were just way too many to make it their fault from my perspective, AG was a strikers graveyard for many years because we simply didn't create much for them. The only one who made and finished his own chances was Maynard....

Here's our ideal player - someone with talent, commitment and who only wants to play for us on low wages - perhaps in my mind only and one who no longer exists in the true footballing arena. John Atyeo anyone?

He got better as the season went on I thought, last few months of the 08 season he was quality. I can remember I was in the dolman around the new years time in our promotion season and he was having a shocker, someone called him a useless fat **** when he come over for a throw in and trunds told him to **** off <laugh> I loved him but can see why people we're annoyed, 1m at the time was big money and he didn't exactly live up to the potential he showed at Swansea.
