Don't know if this has been mentioned:

http://metro.co.uk/2015/08/20/south...-will-reject-man-utds-sadio-mane-bid-5351448/

Seems like complete nonsense, I very much doubt we have said we will listen to offers for Pelle. Not only would that upset the player and destabilize other players around him, but he hasn't started terribly this season and we have no other out and out striker options at the moment.

Where do they come up with this garbage, no quotes just made up nonsense as far as I can see. Also surely the 15m valuation for Mane is about 10m short.

The Mane fake bid was leaked by Utd according to a few journos. They believe Utd leaked it to cover up something (either a bid for another player or because they missed out on Pedro). They are saying it is pretty sad thing to do.

In the early days, I did, very much so. I started supporting Saints in 2003 after they lost the FA cup final, I'm not here for glory but weird a sense of affiliation to a club 100 miles down the coast, I even moved to Southampton for university to see my beloved red and white stripes every week. That affiliation was built upon a bedrock of players who I identified as the true Saints, sure they came and went but there was always a handful of fans favorites in each squad. Now I feel like when I take my seat in the Kingsland corner I have to start cheering a whole new bunch of 'favourites' and the previous lot have pissed off. Its becoming difficult to support a new bunch, . The Southampton way has disappeared in to the greedy and cynical world of football. As a result, atmosphere suffers - how can 30,000 people be expected to come up with creative chants for 5-10 new names in a host of languages if they can't pronounce the name properly. I can no longer sanction paying £35 to see a bunch of names run around kissing a badge that means a lot to me, in the knowledge they will leave for a few extra dollar signs. If loyalty in football is dead, why is the fickle fan expected to remain patriotically loyal to a club?

Its football. Sing a song about the team instead then. Since 2003 there has been a continual turn over in players, so I'm not sure there have been that many that have hung around, so I'm not really sure you've fully experienced a bedrock of players as from 2003 onwards lots changed.

In football, you don't usually choose a team, it usually chooses you for some reason and it's the club that you stick with. Usually.

Days of players staying at a club for 10 years have been (mostly) missing for years so without being rude, I don't really see what you have to complain about. I don't see any clarity in your thinking. I support Saints. I get attached to some of the players and feel a little disappointment when they leave. Saints always are there and I am always there (I don't mean physically)

Quick question: if most of our squad had a longevity of say 7-8 years at the club, would you then sanction the £35?

But why not already? Everyday I wait for news about others being pillaged in the same way we are, but nothing. Its very frustrating.
We must stand firm this late into the window, & I believe we will, but I'm surprised that there's no bids on the table for Bolasie & Berahino* +other stand out players at so called smaller clubs?

(*Spurs derisory offer obviously does not count)

De Gea - Man Utd
Van Djik - Celtic
Sterling - Liverpool (done)
Stone - Everton
Kane - Spurs
Eriksson - Spurs

To be fair we haven't spent much, seeing as we sold Morgan & the TV contract is ever increasing. While I agree to an extent that you don't necessarily need to spend big to be successful and we have had some success with our black box, the signings we have made don't look like they're going to take us any higher than we already are/have been. This is the thing, LR & co have stated that it's our ambition to establish ourselves as regular European regulars but we do seem to be doing it as cheaply as possible. Whether that's good or bad is a matter of opinion. If you look at our permanent signings this summer:

Clasie - £10m?
Cedric - £4m
Juanmi - £5m
Romeu - £5m
Martina - £2m?

Out of those, I'm only confident that Clasie is actually good enough for where we're supposedly aiming to be, the others aren't bad signings, but they're not much to get excited about. So after that, it leaves us with a net spend of ~£2m after the sale of Schneiderlin. If we're only making one more signing (VVD or Koulibaly) then I'd be very surprised to finish any higher than 10th.

nb - I'm not criticizing the clubs transfer policy, but I think people raise valid points when they say we're not spending a lot and I don't think we're going to be close to what we achieved last season.

That's not my point (I know I didn't explain it). The "really" is because I think we've been through the "how much do we spend" thing so many times now. If we spend big fees, that is usually on players expecting bigger wages and we are not really at that level. Spending smaller amounts and selling for larger amounts, while keeping salaries "sensible" is what we are about as a club. Surely people get that now.

VVD will cost in excess of £10 million too. Cedric and Juanmi are young players who have been tracked by some of the biggest clubs in the world. Much rather continue our policy of signing young, talented players, but also splashing the cash when needed i.e. Clasie, VVD.

Fair points, anyone who's listened to a Les Reed interview knows we're 'sensible' in our transfer activity, but I think we're trying to be too cute about it and we will start to fall away from where we want to be. Like I said, I don't see us finishing top half this season based on the players we've signed this summer.

What players would you have liked us to go for then, realistically speaking?

I'm sure they have been tracked, but you could say that about thousands of young players throughout Europe. I posted a lot of reactions from Sporting fans about Cedric who said that he's not good enough for the PL and they were glad to get £4m for him.

I agree that we could finish lower this year and have forecast so. I've said for a few seasons now that fans need to understand that we are a long term project and progress isn't always a continued upward curve on a graph. Playing Europa league and having an "ok" Premier League season is still learning and progressing for me.

I did mean to put in my original post that personally I actually have no problem with the we operate in the market and as long as we play entertaining football then I'm happy. My point was that people are somewhat justified for being underwhelmed with some of our signings this summer, as it is going to be a bit of a 'comedown' PL season for us.

I think some people are getting confused.

Anyone who has a concern get's told to trust the board etc.

It's not an either / or situation.

Fans can trust the board/club and still express concerns you know.

EDIT: This isn't aimed at anyone in particular, just frustrating to see people with fair concerns just dismissed automatically as we have to never question the board etc.
