I think he's always functioned better with support up top; his partnerships with RVN, RVP, Tevez and Berba amongst others were genuinely frightening. He can't run the line as a lone striker.

Rooney's 30 later this year and has played non stop for 14 years at the top level of club football and as the focal point of the national side. It's not surprising that it should catch up with him eventually. Van Gaal needs to buy a central striker. The sooner he does it the better. Than he has options - one of which is to use Rooney more sparingly for a while until he recovers his sharpness.
