Very true Dave but I think that IF we wanted to 'push the boat out' I'm pretty sure we could borrow against that security. Not saying we should, but it would undoubtedly be possible <ok>

There is no evidence to suggest that the board is being naive about transfer bids, unless you're intent on only believing in the Steve Bruce story of football. Every single transfer will have been carefully DDed beforehand and an offer will have been made at the bottom of reasonable. By all accounts, Roma were prepared to accept £4.5m anyway, with the hold-up being where the player wants to go, so I don't know why you're so convinced that it's an unreasonably low offer

I imagine much is already securitised (I know many clubs have securitised stadium income, etc).

But it's much simpler than that - just budget to finish 17th instead of 18th. All of a sudden magic money appears (in the future...) The problem arises if we finish lower than 17th...

I think a loan deal for Destro would make good sense. We could see how well he fits in and he could have a go or showcase his talents in the PL without having to be threatened by the possibility of relegation. Much better than the RvW situation.

I think it's hard to label McNally as naïve, he knows the market and what he's up to. I think it's partly that he's playing with a limited amount of money. If he starts at £6m and they'll take £5m he's just lost £1m. Otherwise you can end up doing the negotiating against yourself.
We also it should be pointed out have very little way of knowing what's true or not. I'm willing to trust McNally I think we're close to having a good team and clearly they're still trying to add to it.

Put it this way Rob which, if any of our starting eleven Saturday would you be prepared to let go for that amount of money ? Not too many I would suggest.

No, but then you're running into the economics of buying a team's first choice player, versus someone cluttering up squad space. An injury could well have led to someone like RyBen starting, for whom £4.5m would look quite good right now, based on recent opportunities.

We also don't have £100m at the end of the season, it's not like that money magically appears in our coffers at the end of the season. The £100m prize that is talked about for winning promotion actually means the TV money for the first season, plus several seasons of parachute payments which total £100m. So whilst we have a guaranteed income of £100m, it'll take 5 years before we see it all. Last season our wages + signings were stretching the limit of what our parachute payments could handle, and we made £15m or so in player sales.

Effectively, that means the parachute payments (a considerable amount of that £100m) are already earmarked for paying our squad should we go down. Everyone will have got a payrise when we achieved promotion, eroding that £100m further, and I imagine the combined wages of Brady, Mulumbu, Wisdom and Kean is pushing £90-100k p/w on top of that.

Destro on a "loan with option to buy" seems like shrewd business. I know very little about him, but at least we won't then have three seasons of contract to pay if he flops and we want rid. Still not convinced it'll come off, mind.

And how do we repay a loan if we get relegated? We've spent years getting out of that hole I don't want to see the club jump back in it again. I see where you're coming from but it's just not worth the risk imho.

Agreed! With an option to buy fixed now please!

DH has already answered for you (sorry my first post sounded more lairy than it was intended), but the point is simply you are not comparing like with like on this. Destro simply wasn't a first team player and Roma have already said they want to sell him.

But realistically, I simply don't understand why people think that McNally will just be firing stupidly low numbers all over the place at other clubs' best players. He won't. There will have been heavy and detailed research into each player and how much the other club is likely to accept, and then the offer will be competitive albeit priced at the very lowest point they would reasonably accept (such is the way of negotiation...) and then we would negotiate upwards.

It's all clear from the Brady negotiation - Bruce blows his top because he says we bid embarrassingly low amounts of £2m, £2.5m and £3m. But it's pretty clear (albeit I can't say for sure that this is the case) that taking his numbers, our final bid was under £4m (it's the add-ons and debt write-offs that make the total deal value about £7m). So "embarrassingly low" eh? Well, compared to £7m yes, but again that's not like with like. When you compare it to the figure that it actually represented, there was not much unreasonable about those opening bids, other than the fact that Hull weren't going to accept them (as is their right).

In short: I can't quite work out why people think McNally would behave quite unprofessionally and irresponsibly when ALL of our other transfer dealings have been smooth and relationships have been very healthy (e.g. Neil and Andreu, let alone all the others), as well as it not being his style in practically every other manner of running the club. It doesn't make sense. The point is simply that the Press/Bruce want to make it sound like we've been unprofessional for their own reasons by not giving us the whole picture. And they remarkably seem to have taken quite a few of our fans for this ride.

We're discussing whether McNally has a habit of bidding low and "being away with the pixies".

I think I can make out the letters of "Norwich City" from the words "It is shortly and, except unexpected twists"... Must be a sign!

Or even shorter: I steadfastly refuse to ever accept that I am wrong about anything on here so regardless of whether anyone is the slightest bit interested I will continue to bang on about it until I am blue in the face and you have all accepted that it was indeed I all along who called it correctly (even though I actually didn't).

    "****wit"?? Really?? <laugh><laugh>

Munky I am not going to annoy everyone by getting into a debate with you given: (a) you are intent on arguing about something that is simply irrelevant to what I was discussing with KIO; and (b) you have repeatedly demonstrated that you are a complete hypocrite with absolutely zero shame when it comes to your personal vendettas and the way in which you engineer criticisms of others despite plenty of contradictory evidence (I have repeatedly stated that I was wrong, but I realise that doesn't fit the pariah picture you like to paint of me so you refuse to accept that I accepted I was wrong <laugh> - ****wit indeed!) I am sure you want to have the last word, but let's just leave it there or if you really are spoiling for a fight as usual you can privately message me.
