Will be interesting to see what koeman says about it. Apparently it's only interest. Hope fonte doesn't leave, can't see why he would, especially to villa.
It's imperitive that we keep Fonte this season! Not that I think he would be interested in Villa, or that we are interested in selling him. I hope if Fonte does leave us before he retires that he goes back to Portugal.
I've now got rabid Aston Villa fans going for me on Twitter because I said they're not what they were, they're a relegation battler with a loudmouth manager who needs to prove his worth and an owner who isn't putting his hand in his own pocket anymore.

If (as I suspect) this is posturing for an improved contract, it will be interesting to see what the club does. On the one hand he's an ageing player. On the other, he's, well he's bloody Jose Fonte FFS! What would you do?
VILLA IN FONTE TALKS
Aston Villa could be set to make another signing this summer as we understand they are talks to sign Southampton captain Jose Fonte.
The defender signed a new deal last summer until 2017 but it is understood that Villa and Everton are interested in signing him.
Saints, though, would not let him leave without signing a replacement centre-back and Celtic's Virgil van Dijk is their number one target. (Sky)

Why would any centre back (even an ageing one) not want to work with one of the best coaches and centre halves who have played the game in recent memory? I am sure he would not just be going to be 'saluted' as he scores a goal or makes an important tackle.

This to me would make no sense at all, either for the player or the club.
They're assuming that Caulker is an Alderweireld replacement and thus VVD is a Fonte replacement. Caulker is a Gardos replacement and VVD will (hopefully) be a Alderweireld replacement. Right. Even if we think we can improve on Fonte...it doesn't make sense to do it this summer with all the changes we've had to make in defense and DM. Fonte is too important to the team and club.

My only fear is that we have now got such high ambitions that Fonte is concerned that he won't be first choice...and he has spoken to Ronald about it. Clubs aren't as sentimental about players as we are. Fonte will always be first choice with me. I want this discussion stopped right now.
Have to say it would be a very strange move. Have to say loving the back and forth between dtlw and the villa fans in uproar.
