Great day.

Australian batsmen look world beaters in their own conditions on fast pitches where the bounce is true. But they look the opposite away from home when the ball moves around - either swinging or seaming as in England or spinning.

Root really is top class. Has the full repertoire of strokes and judges length so instinctively, which means he is equally proficient on the front or back foot.

At the end of incredible 1st day at Trent Bridge, England lead Australia by 214 runs

Their shortest lasted 99 balls (or 12.3 eight-ball overs), in Brisbane in 1936. Thirteen out of Australia's 14 shortest Test innings have come against England.
 
You have to pinch yourself that it's only the end of Day 2!!
With only 3 wickets remaining Australia need another 90 runs to make England bat again

As on 2005, England had a bowling attack for the conditions. They complemented each other and chipped in when needed.

And as in 2005, England had the stand out batsman, who scored big runs at the right time.

Fast bowler James Anderson has been named in the England squad for the fifth Ashes Test against Australia.
Anderson, who missed the fourth Test with a side strain, replaces Mark Footitt in a 14-man squad for the match at The Oval starting on 20 August.
Personally I would only play Jimmy if he was 100% fit

Given that Jimmy has been disappointing overseas in recent series and given that The Ashes are won, I would retire him/ask him to retire on this high.

He's still fit. He's a thin as a whippet and has not bulked up like some fast bowlers do past 30. Sir Richard Hadlee was the same and played until he was 39. He came to his peak at Jimmy's age or even older. So there's reason to think he's good for another three years at least. And I don't agree that he's been poor overseas. There are a lot of flat wickets which don't suit swing and seam bowlers, but he's still shown a lot of skill and control. In India, he has 22 [email protected], in WI [email protected] records elswhere are mainly skewed by his poor start in Test cricket or because of games in places where everybody suffered.
 
Ashton Agar will return to international cricket for the first time since his memorable cameo in the 2013 Ashes series, after being chosen as the lone spin bowler in Australia's first ODI squad since winning the World Cup final at home in Melbourne in March.
Agar has been chosen with an eye towards the future as the selectors continue to deny Nathan Lyon a place in the limited-overs side. Joe Burns and Marcus Stoinis have also been chosen in the limited-overs squad for the first time, the former expected to replace the injured Aaron Finch as David Warner's opening partner.
As expected, Steven Smith will now captain the national side in all formats, the first time this has been the case since Ricky Ponting retired from T20 internationals in September 2009. Michael Clarke then led the T20 side until he also retired from the format in January 2011 in order to concentrate on Test and 50-over matches.
 
Steve Smith will become Australia's Test captain after the Ashes following Michael Clarke's decision to retire at the end of the series.
Smith, 26, already leads the one-day side and will also captain the Twenty20 team in the absence of the injured Aaron Finch.
Fellow batsman David Warner, 28, has been named as Smith's vice-captain.
 
Australia batsman Chris Rogers has confirmed he will retire from Test cricket at the end of the Ashes series.
The 37-year-old will step down after the fifth Test at The Oval, which will be his 25th match for his country.
