Just a note to KIO: American usage is defence, whereas defense is a French spelling. For historical reasons related to the US alliance with the French against the British in the revolutionary war and the later war of 1812, the French spelling was adopted for the Department of Defense, but to my knowledge, that is the only time the French spelling is used in the US. The ****ing Yanks may be committing other sins against English, but defence isn't one of them!![]()
There's a hell of a lot of words that the Americans and Canadians have changed though Rick, my main gripes are:
Colour (Color)
Centre (Center)
Gaol (Jail)
They also have a habit of substituting 'Z' for 'S' in many words, God knows why.
Not only that, they pronounce 'Z' as 'Zee' and not 'Zed' as in the 'mother tounge'
