There's a hell of a lot of words that the Americans and Canadians have changed though Rick, my main gripes are: Colour (Color) Centre (Center) Gaol (Jail) They also have a habit of substituting 'Z' for 'S' in many words, God knows why. Not only that, they pronounce 'Z' as 'Zee' and not 'Zed' as in the 'mother tounge' http://www.tysto.com/uk-us-spelling-list.html I know, I should get out more
I also have to say that when I posted last evening JK , I was on my 4th pint. .........note to self: Don't post when half-pissed
And this just adds to his determination to get the team in the right frame of mind before each game, a quote from today's EDP - "Don’t be too respectful of who you are playing against,” “Football is mental as much as physical. Of course you have to go in respecting your opponent but believing you can play well and beat them. If you go in with the attitude, ‘let’s just hold out and see how the game goes,’ that is not how I want my team to approach. That is not how I approach it and I made my feelings known.” He is so much the opposite to CH, it is unreal and just looking forward to showing what we can do. I'd still like to see a new CB come in though!!!!
Nail, Head, Hit once again Mr Gowers http://metro.co.uk/2015/07/28/dont-...-judge-transfer-window-until-the-end-5310033/
Curiously, both centre and colour are French spellings which were adopted into English probably after William the Conqueror, when French became the courtly language. Gaol is a survivor from Middle English. I have a theory that countries like the US and Canada focus on phonetic spellings (as in jail) because of the many immigrants who have come there from different countries. As for 'z' rather than 's', that is because the US adopted Greek derivatives rather than Latin ones, as English uses. Finally, I take it tounge was a 'typo' (just so it doesn't corrupt anybody reading this.
Just a few personal observations a) £7m for a 23 year old current International with 2 years Premiership experience who can adequately cover 2 positions is a bargain. b) If Martin is playing out of position at CB why have Lambert, Adams, Hughton, AN and recent Scottish Managers including Strachan played him there and how did he get into the Championship Team of the year as a CB? Having said that I agree that we do need to buy another quality CB and move Turner on. c) Teams like Palace are not just buying overpriced rubbish. Cabaye, for example, is better than anything we are likely to attract to Carrow Road. d) We undoubtedly have the best squad we have possibly ever had but the Premiership is now stronger than it ever was. The top 5 are in a league of their own and every other Team is stronger than it was 2 years ago. e) Common sense tells us that AN will play one on his own up front. Only Jerome and Lafferty can fulfil that role so if we are going to sell Lafferty then we need to get in cover for that role very quickly and also get rid of RVW or Hooper or Grabban as well. f) I suspect that AN will play both Tettey and Mulumbu with the latter given licence, or license as the case may be, to push forward when appropriate. With a back 4, Brady on the left side of midfield and Jerome up front we have a hell of a lot of squad players fighting for the 2 remaining places.
a) Not sure that Brady is a bargain, and even less so if we sign another LB, but he is a good creative player on the left-wing and will do well for us. b) Agree about Martin, who is fully expereinced as a CB now and an excellent captain. c) What remains to be seen is how much commitment these big name players have, as QPR found to their cost. d) True, but we won't be doing a lot of 'bedding in' of new players, so can hit the ground running, hopefully. e) Grabban has showed that he can play as a lone striker, and did so again against Augsberg. RvW also can if he stays. f) Both will play against big teams, especially away, but other CMs will get games as well.
The OED says: "As past participles of get, got and gotten both date back to Middle English. The form gotten is not used in British English but is very common in North American English. In North American English, got and gotten are not identical in use. Gotten usually implies the process of obtaining something, as in he had gotten us tickets for the show, while gotimplies the state ofpossession or ownership, as in I haven’t got any money." There's no excuse for the other two!
Following on from point f, I imagine this is how we'll start the season based on current additions: Ruddy Whittaker Martin Bassong Brady Tettey Redmond Howson Mulumbu Johnson Jerome A starting XI all with Premier League experience, and all bar Ruddy have Premier League goals. It's a far cry from our line-up after our last promotion! Mulumbu looks the sort of midfielder who can really make the 4-1-4-1 work, or can be more disciplined and sit deeper in a 4-2-3-1.
Maybe with RM as a CB he is the best of a pretty ordinary bunch. I can't say that in the past three seasons or so either Scotland or NCFC have been overly stocked in the world class centre half department. That said he is a decent footballer regardless of position and he clearly sees his future in the centre and so I imagine that it is also sensible for managers to try to put round pegs in round holes. 1950 is right in that several managers all of whom know vast amounts more about the game than we ever will have selected him in that position and the teams in question have had pretty good runs during his tenure at CB. Scotland whilst still clearly pretty poor are doing as well under WGS as they have done in the past 30 years or so and we have risen from L1, had three promotions and only one relegation, which with the benefit of hindsight was a pretty close run thing all of which have had RM in the team either at RB or CB. Whether he and Seb can cut it in the PL next season is open to debate. I often worry with RM that his lack of strength and speed can get found out at the top level. His strength of reading the game and timing tackles are really the bare minimum for the PL.
Latest rumour is that we've agreed a £1.25m loan fee for Andre Wisdom from Liverpool. Played RB for West Brom most of last season.
Meat. Bones. Here. http://www.itv.com/news/update/2015-07-28/liverpool-defender-set-to-join-norwich-on-loan/? Edit - Full name Andre Alexander Shaquille Wisdom
Presumably Liverpool are close to signing Digne from PSG, so Wisdom becomes surplus to requirements. Hopefully he can have as much of an impact as our last loanee RB. He has played LB before, most recently against ourselves actually in a 5-2 Liverpool win a couple of seasons back. So perhaps that was Neil's thinking when he said we were looking for a LB. Certainly a lot of cover in that position now, just a shame it will push Toffolo a long way down the pecking order.
Another rumour is that Jake Kean, Blackburn's reserve goalkeeper, has been spotted at Colney along with Brady. Would be interesting to see where he fits into the pecking order, he's older than Rudd (24), but their experience is probably comparable. Imagine there'll be some competition between the two, but Ruddy will be comfortable in his position.
This was not on the rumour radar. Excellent piece of work. Hopefully he will be primarily a CB for us.
Really? I thought he mostly played RB? EDIT: in fact, I'm pretty sure he exclusively played RB for West Brom.
