He was and did extremely well for them. If we didn't have a million midfielders already I'd say we should definitely be in for him but I can't for the life of me work out where he'd fit unless Diakite goes mad and Faurlin breaks down. Saying that, he's better than Diakite anyway but surely central midfielders aren't where we're looking. From Palace, would love Mariappa at the back and Gayle up front. Probably not realistic but they have just loaned in Bamford.
Not really much choice when he's got a release clause. Like or loathe Green, you can't deny he's good in the Championship.
Three relegations? Maybe the only England GK in history named as first choice at the WC and then dropped after the first game? Some of the worst distribution the fans have ever seen at Loftus Road? A reputation as a GK who always has an error in him?
All true, but mostly not relevant to his merits as a Championship goalkeeper. He was consistently very good the last time we were in this league. I know he's not perfect but he's on too good a wage for anyone to take him it would seem, is a popular and experienced member of what is now a young squad and even his worst critic would have to say he's better than most Championship goalkeepers.
Perhaps he will finally get the Rub of the Green? please log in to view this image please log in to view this image
Have I missed something, or is this "move" still just speculation? I would argue that the club couldn't afford both goalkeepers last season, let alone in the Championship! At least half of the Premier clubs have a second choise 'keeper that we would not consider as anywhere near good enough for our first choice. Certainly, no Championship side would have a back up as good or as expensive as Green & McCarthy. One of them has to go. The decision as to which one is not in our hands. The choice will be made by other clubs as to who they want & how much they are willing to pay. McCarthy seems to be their choice. By definition, the reserve 'keeper is exactly that & anyone above that level would be a luxury. To pay Premier wages for around five appearances a season shouls not be part of our business model. To be fair McCarthy always seemed to play well against us and I still believe he is an England goalkeeper in the making...... But if Green is staying then it does create a strong spine down the middle which is something every side needs......I don't have a problem with him staying as long as he improves his distribution.....
Alex McCarthy set for £3million Crystal Palace switch after undergoing medical at Selhurst Park PLUS Barry Bannan has not gone on Palace’s pre-season trip to South Africa - and is likely to be on his way out of Selhurst Park McCarthy + Bannan for £3 million? The buyout clause is apparently £3.5 million http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/barry-bannan-set-crystal-palace-6118872 Parish Speaks On Transfer Plans Chairman Steve Parish has said that there will be another couple of faces coming into Selhurst Park this summer, but despite the speculation Charlie Austin is probably beyond us. Having already brought in Yohan Cabaye and Chelsea's Patrick Bamford on a loan spell, we are now being heavily linked with a move for Queens Park Rangers goalkeeper Alex McCarthy with the likes of Sky Sports for example saying we are on the verge of completing a deal and making him our third signing of the summer. What the means for the future of either Julian Speroni or Wayne Hennessey remains to be seen as for Hennessey especially speculation linking him with a move away won't go away but at least with logic implying the Welsh international with replace the legend when he hangs up his gloves, having McCarthy on board may give rise to a loan deal to keep everyone happy for a period. Anyway, with us continuing to be linked to the likes of Ashley Williams, Dame N'Doye and Loic Remy amongst many others, Talksport have Parish quoted as saying that manager Alan Pardew has a list of ten players on his mind and whilst we won't do a deal for them all, so far we are only missing two of our original main targets. 'We would like to do a couple more. I`d like to do a couple more and the manager reeled off about 10 to me tonight.' Parish went on to say that another deal is almost done (believed to be McCarthy) and that should be announced Wednesday (today). 'We have got probably three of our targets. Three of the five we originally wanted to do.' Going back to McCarthy, Sky say he has now completed his medical and the 25 year old should be announced shortly once personal terms and finalised and the paperwork is pushed through on a reported £3.5million deal. Having moved to Loftus Road last summer from Reading, he only made four appearances for them and it's said he will battle for the No 1 jersey this year. Adlene Guedioura, who spent two spells out on loan last year with Watford, is being linked with a move in the opposite direction with him only having 12 months left on his initial deal. He's also being linked with a move to newly promoted Bournemouth. As for the Charlie Austin links, Talksport quote Parish as adding. 'Charlie is definitely a player we admire but there are lots of clubs interested in him. There's a good chance he will go beyond us, so to speak.' The same interview also had our chairman confirm that discussions had taken place with representatives of Corinthians, the current club of Brazilian Alexandre Pato but nothing is firm on that front. The 25 year old has 27 caps for his country and in his time with AC Milan he scored 51 times in 117 appearances. 'Offered` would indicate that the club have rung up. There is only one entity that can sell the player, it is the club that have got the player. We have had a conversation with intermediaries where we are led to believe that it is possible to buy that player for certain sums of money with wages of x should we show an interest in doing that.' Parish goes on quickly to say that it doesn't mean a deal is in the offing though. 'That doesn`t mean that that is true. Could he be a Palace player at the start of the season? It is unlikely I would suggest.' Read more: http://www.palace.vitalfootball.co.uk/article.asp?a=406406#ixzz3gduWMzZM
As they say on the Parlace website...forget the official announcement...he is already in SA with Parlace https://hltco.files.wordpress.com/2015/07/20150723-073401-27241008.jpg McCarthy is a Palace player SO WHY NO ANNOUNCEMENT Only one explanation they are trying to convince us to make it money and a player (Guediora or Bannan) rather than straight money
It's not on the Palace site yet either so I guess a contract hasn't been signed. The club will only put it on the official site when it's 100% done.
So once McCarthy goes (which I am not happy about) then Joe Lumley is number 2? Anyone know if he is any good? Is he a future number one post-Green or do we need to add a goalkeeper to the shopping list?
We definitely need to sign another proven young keeper who is prepared to sit on the bench most of this season, deputizing for Rob Green when required, and assuming the #1 spot the following season. As is the tradition with other teams with two capable keepers, they should always allow him to assume responsibility for the FA or League Cup matches - not that the run will likely last long. McCarthy basically sat on the bench for an entire season - no wonder he was a bit rusty when called upon to perform.
Just watch him now oust Speroni and have a brilliant season that will culminate with an England call up.......You read it here first...... Only we could sign players for the future and then move them on without giving them a chance.......
Best part about this sale is that another £3.5m received in transfer fees in this season's budget lessens pressure on need to sell (and boosts chances of keeping Phillips). Can bring in a cheaper sub, we were living beyond our means to have a back up keeper on McCarthy's wages in Championship with Green clearly going no where. Can also use this cash towards reinvesting on positions we are more in need of players for starting 11 like at full back
