Just checked again as that was this morning, and I can't find one bookmaker taking bets as present.

Putting the "is it, isn't it" a contract situation with Atletico to one side, the guy is potentially going to be signed for £11m on £50kpw. That is very well within our means, particularly for a player we know and want to keep. I understand the arguments here regarding a moral stance but I can't help feeling that we'll be cutting our nose off to spite our face if we lose out as a direct consequence of our stance.

Contractual situations like this do occur frequently outside the arena of football. You just have to roll with the punches and do what's right for you.

I see we are getting to the point where many of us have accepted he won't be joining, amd as a result are making up reasons as to why he isn't that great anyway. "Injury prone, not that good anyway" etc. Ahh football.

Oh good i'm not the only one.

Can we at least wait for confirmation before we go turn into a shouty rabble on here? The club have by all accounts tried to act reasonably and with integrity and IF he goes to spurs its because AM were determined to screw us over/massively incompetent.

Losing Toby would be a very disappointing but I was hoping we wouldve learned from last season...a quick glance at saintsweb shows me that hope is probably in vain but lets at least try on here ay.

Atletico have dicked all sides around: Spurs, Toby and of course Saints. If he goes to Spurs, he goes to Spurs, and Saints will sign another good CB. He is a good defender, but like the others, I'm sure he is replaceable.

I trust Ronald, and I trust Les to do what they think is right with this deal. It isn't their fault that Atletico have acted like a bunch of immature dickheads. Equally though, it isn't Spurs' fault - this is the market and if they thought he was up for sale, then of course they would want him.

We do not know what is going or gone on. How do we know if Saints didn't say we will give you the extra cash but AM being pissed off about the leaked news refused? We simply have no idea what is going on apart from:

    1) AM breaking agreement.
    2) It's a mess.

I don't see why people have to guess what else went on.

Also as DTLW said why should we have to pay more when a agreement was in place anyways?

My best guess is that we will be pragmatic and take a cut....shame as it would have made an interesting test case...however, only lawyers get rich if you go to court.

'Why would we pay more if we can get him for 7 milion pounds' is a non-argument, really, since it seems we can't get him for 7 milion pounds, otherwise we would. So, it comes to this - 'we should pay more because we can't get him for 7 milion pounds.' That's why.

So we should accept AM not following a legally signed agreement and say "**** it, it doesn't matter that we had a agreed fee. That's hand you some more money anyways"?

If the options are to either insist that we had a deal and consequently lose the player to Tottenham, or ignore the deal and pay some more money to get the player, then I choose the second option.

Exactly. Some people seem to be under the impression that our ability to do deals that suit us left with Nicola Cortese. If we threw money at Atletico to get Toby what would that do for our reputation the next time a bit of hard bargaining over a player... let's see, say, Morgan Schneiderlin... was called for? Woodward would be laughing up his sleeve at us for being the incompetent idiots some of you would like us to be.

So you choose to let a club that has acted illegally get away with it? As Chilco said we would be seen as a club that can get walked over.

I think it is worth remembering that the Liebherr family have a strong sense regarding conducting their business in a proper manner. I won't bother relating a conversation I had with a friend of mine who met them as I have done that before, but suffice it to say, for them, a deal is a deal.
