A little bit underwhelmed to be honest, good player but is he somebody who can take us to the next level? Only time will tell I suppose. I would have preferred a mata or even n'zogbia ahead of downing. Anyway welcome to the club!
1. no fee published, 18.5mil or 20.. wait for comolli talking at press conference when he signs 2. yes a winger, the right one? time will tell. 3. i agree that only so many flashy players are required. suarez gives that spark, i'd want one more of them 4. still not sure how this team will come together. 5. back up striker, centre half and Left back required. I want to see the back of n'gog nad a left full as priority.
Yeah true. I must admit the squad we now have is looking very impressive, especially in midfield and up front. A variety we probably haven't had since the 90's. A couple of additions in defense and we're good to go However, the leftback situation may not be as bad as people think. Been watching a lot of LFC TV and the majority of pundits suggest we have good enough cover in case we cant find the right player to strengthen the position. We have Johnson (done a very good job last season when asked to switch), Aurelio (If he can get his fitness), Robinson, Wilson. With Konchesky leaving though it looks likely we will sign one, along with possibly another CB for more depth we should be a very good outfit.
Flanagan did well at LB today; probably better at LB then Johnson although he isn't that adept at going forward. Perhaps we may just have to accept we get a very defensive LB and they don't attack as much?
I wasn't suggesting I wanted him to be flashy..in fact far from it just that maybe people are thinking for that price thats what we should be getting.I think he is ok but would still have liked to see us sign N'zogbia ..still time yet
Not quite.. considering we've made a loss in the transfer market in the last 2 seasons it's a welcome change to actually spend some money. Rafa was always working to a tight budget, I like that Kenny doesn't have to think about money for once and he can identify targets. Meanwhile, looks like Newcastle (and sunderland for that matter) look to set to fork out a ton on wages to a load of mediocre players?
Dunno about turning into Citeh! But we seem to be acting rather extravagantly, seems kinda strange as we aint been able to do this for ages. Time will tell if the strategy will work long term. You've made a few good signings also. I have a feeling you guys will have a good season
Hmm, with it being Mike Ashley, the tightest football chairman going, I doubt we would splash highly on wages. And can I ask why my article was removed? It wasn't a WUM article, it was to start a basic discussion. Seems you can't handle the truth. Bloody prison camp over here.
I don't really care if clubs spend big. But when they do surely it should be on players who are worth that money? How the **** can anyone pay 20m for Henderson? I wouldn't have him for 8m. And 35m for Carroll , need I say more? I think you were left with no choice but to pay 20m for Downing , even though he's not worth that much. But regarding the fact you've now set a standard and have indirectly expressed you're willing to pay ludicrous prices for average players , clubs will want big money for decent players , like Downing. I'm not a big fan of Ashley's but even an idiot can see that Ashley is a greedy bastard and when he says he has set a wage cap for all new signing and players looking to renew their contract , he means it. Don't see anything mediocre about players like Cabaye , Ba and Marveaux? Remember Marveaux? The one you had been following for a while and missed out on at the end? It left your club seething according to various reports. But I guess it's another case of , he's **** because he didn't sign for us.
Maybe you don't have too many WUMs on your board, but we get them regularly and can safely say that once one gets going - the Mancs get involved and it lasts 22 pages ending in comments about Heysel, Munich and Bobby Charlton.
The same Marveaux we dismissed because he wanted too much in wages? Cabaye, Ba and Marveaux are not exactly top 6 is what I'm saying. Would you see them going to a top 6 club? If not, then you have to ask whether Ashley has enough ambition to get you back up there. We pay what we need to, we weren't the only ones to offer a lot for Downing. Arsenal reportedly offered £18.5m too, and they don't splash the cash unless it's really needed... so somebody rates him.
Now that would piss me off, which is why I keep the campaign going for us to have the power to ban members from our board. Relying on Mick and Syd just doesn't work.
Couldn't have been that much as his wages must have been under 50-60k when he joined us. And you didn't dismiss him , we actually stole him from under your noses We were in the Championship two seasons ago , I think if you'd ask any Newcastle fan he'd tell you he'd be delighted if we could just establish ourselves as a Premier League side and finish in the top 10. We're quite realistic when it comes to that. So you think Downing is worth 20m? And what about Carroll and Henderson? Are they worth what you paid for?
Badger. As Ze Liver suggested, things have been a little touchy round here, and we have just got it all sorted and everythings running okay. Feel free to re-do your article, just try and make it more inpartial and less likely to provoke a angry reaction.
No worries! I happened to agree with the bulk of what was said. We are overspending and being held to ransom somewhat. Are we ruining British football? I don't think so. Just meraly doing what we have to to compete.
