Paid too much for Carroll obviously, but I think the circumstances were obvious. Henderson, I'm still curious... He's a RM/RW naturally, not a CM so he's been played out of position for a year and with some good players around him - who knows how he'll turn out? Is he worth 20m at the moment? No. Nobody really knows what Kenny has planned, but we suspect it's good. As for your ambition, I think you should be looking for a top 7 finish (above Everton hopefully) either next season or the season after. I think a good striker on loan could do you wonders though, Sturridge? Welbeck? Pacheco?
Would love Sturridge, would even have your Pacheco but I would prefer we got a permanent buy, as we will be back to square one next year. We supposedly have the money now(me and you both know that isn't the case with MA). We haven't actually spent a penny due to the sale of Nolan, we've made a profit so far, but we won't see any big money spent on players I don't think.
True, maybe the ruining comment was a bit strong. Buying English players is great to see, but its annoying seeing clubs having to pay so much. Jones to MU for £15m? Pull the other one.
35m for Carroll really was crazy , he's nowhere near that. Don't think my evaluation of Henderson will change , he's simply not worth that much. Anyways , I guess time will tell. As badger said , I prefer a permanent deal so we can actually start looking to the future and not having to worry about the same situation next summer. Sturridge would be a fantastic signing but doubt Ashley will fork out the needed 20m for him , if anyone. Don't know much about Pacheco , do you rate him?
Yeah, he was the starlet we were hoping would come through last year. Alas, with Hodgson it wasn't to be! He's a bit inconsistent, but when he plays - he plays superbly. He's not much of an out and out striker but he'll set up plenty of goals; and adds a bit of flair to the side. I think if he was to be loaned out to a good premier league club it would benefit everyone involved.
Sounds alright , but as I said priority would be to get in a striker on permanent basis who can get us 15-20 goals next season. To add someone like Pacheco to it would be really good though
Well if you ever get to talk to Pardew tell him to look at van Wolfswinkel. He's just joined Sporting Lisbon - but he's quite a player.
Gonna give you some rep mate as you kind of jumped in with that other Newcastle fan- he's been on here before only to wind people up (last time was to boast that Tiote was miles ahead of Lucas and would boss him like he did the first game and as you know we won)- but are joining in now and being fair. Hope that doesn't sound patronizing. You don't have to agree with us on here, just be prepared to argue your case and we won't take it personally. Yes compared to other teams we have maybe spent a lot, but if we can afford it and the bosses have factored resale and what success it could bring us then only time will tell if we have actually 'overspent'. What i do know is that the jigsaw is fitting together. We sign the biggest aerial threat since... well probably Shearer... and have then signed the most effective set piece taker in the league last season, and are about to sign the winger with the 2nd most crosses of any player last year and by far the player with the most crosses in the last 2 years. Now that is for roughly just over £60million. We got £50million for Torres alone and have to think with Arsenal's situation that we need to seize Champions League. If, and that's a big if as they still have a lot of quality, then the players have paid for themselves largely. We then have Suarez, worth his money all day long for me, and Henderson (jury is obviously out) and that's our situation. Also for now i'm going to ignore the Marveaux comments from the other guy even though they are very annoying and almost certainly not true.
Pacheco is an excellent prospect, the trouble seems to be his consistency. If he could gain some valuable experience from a decent premier league team such as Newcastle then hopefully it benefit both parties involved
Don't see any harm in a loan deal , would be good for the player and our two clubs. We were heavily linked with him in January but nothing came to fruition. Was really disappointed as he looks like a great player.
Your manager's stuck in an 80's time warp. Buying lesser British players from lesser clubs, expecting them to make the step up in class, doesn't seem like a great strategy in 2011. I thought you'd be contenders for the coming season, but after your summer signings I'm not so sure.
Someone needs to have a word with Ferguson then, as I can't see Rooney, Carrick, Ferdinand, Young, Jones, Berbatov, Valencia etc working out as they're from lesser premier league clubs. Man U might aswell throw the towel in now.
his key point was lesser british players, not lesser clubs. Berbatov at the time was totenhams hero, valencia was wigans best player, rooneys was englands best young player at the time, and look how hes turned out? top 10 in the world if im honest, and i dislike him quite alot. ferdinand, probabily 2nd best english deffender for england in the past 8 or so years ( Terry first, hes a dickhead, and no one really likes him, but he has been very good ) young, well in the past few months has been englands best player, and jones who know, if he turns out like smalling will be a very good buy for man united. However carrol, i kind of like him and think he has potential, but i dont honestly ever seen him being worth 35m, but he will bag you 15-20 goals a season if he plays as he did in the first 6 months of the season, before he got injured, and he'll probabily get better. Henderson, i honestly think hes vastly overrated and unless your "king" kenny does a miracle ( which he does quite often ) he will deffinately never reach the valuation of 20m, unless inflation goes crazy. Adam good buy, simple as that, if he performs like he did for blackpool ( probz better with the players around him ) He's well worth the reported 9m was it? And finally downing, i think 95% of liverpool fans would have preferred as hes 4 years younger, already better and has great potential, HOWEVER downing is the perfect fit for carrol. If you got baines to join you ( i know unlikely ) or enrique, who both have good crosses and are very good going foward ( baines also has stunning free kicks at times ) i think you would quite easily overpass arsenal for 4th, i find it hard seeing you above chelsea or the two manchester clubs, but its possible. Possibly aim for top 4 this season and maybe if you have some good signings next summer also, aim for top 2 and etc. So all in all i must admit the future is very bright for liverpool (although, if rumours are to be believed, i think its very stupid selling merieles as he was one of your best players last season, but to each their own) Sorry for the bad grammar, its not my strong point, only moved to england when i was nearing 9 so only been here about 7 years, lols.
Whether it's pricey remains to be seen. Higher prices do put more pressure on players. But the positive is FSG backing Kenny for a player he clearly wants. How would Rafa have loved that?
I actually think Carroll is a very good signing, so long as you can keep his head in the right place. Suarez is quality as well. But if I was a Liverpool fan, I'd be disappointed with your summer signings. Adam, Henderson and Downing are all over-rated and over-priced.
really funny seeing all these fans of other clubs getting their knickers in a twist about our spending, fact is dalglish and commoli have identified the players they want, if they are under contract then the selling club can charge what they want, and rightly so as far as I am concerned. Just so happens we have the cash to do it at the moment. It seems the moneyball approach is very much in use, ie the practise of ignoring your own personal opinion on players and signing soley on statistics, it may or may not work but at the main thing is they are improving the squad depth which is where LFC have been lacking for the past 5 years. And for all the whinging bedroom football manager's crying about missing out on signing;s like mata etc. please for the a 100th time understand that we are not in the champions league or europa even. There is only a certain type of player we can realistically go for ! I belive downing will be a success, its impossible for him not to be ! he will add quality, anyone watching him last season can see that he can operate on both wings but spent alot of time on the right either delivering with his right or cutting in on his left, imagine being in Kuyt's position, i love dirk but how many times have we seen moves break down from this part of the pitch when he's been there ? plus the depth his signing brings will be much needed.
I think the problem for Downing, and our own acquisition Ashley Young, is that they've been straitjacketed playing for Villa and England. Villa basically play table football. Flat 4-4-2, backwards and forwards, side to side. Both players will need to develop more flexibility to make the step up in class.
This sums up why we bought Downing and for the price we did. We need someone who can cross the ball into the box for AC, Downing is the best player in the premier league for that - so it makes sense we get him.
