From a blog by a Villa fan:

Now I'll try to dispel a few misconceptions:

"Benteke does not press": This conclusion is drawn from the fact that Villa, under Lambert, never pressed the opposition in their own half. It wasn't our gameplan. In 12/13, for example, we were a primarily a counter-attacking team in a 4-3-3 formation. We sat back with 8 players and lured the opposition to our box, allowing them to commit players forward and thus leaving their defence isolated with the pacey trio of Benteke, Agbonlahor and Weimann to deal with once we broke. The front 3 were never really expected to press. It's not that Benteke doesn't press, it's that he wasn't supposed to. He's not as ferociously fast or tenacious as Suarez, but he's is not a lazy **** either. He will press and harry as much as he can, if that's what you ask of him.

"Benteke cannot pass the ball": This assumption must come from his passing completion stats, which are inevitably woeful because he was used as a target man in the 13/14 season by Lambert. I believe, at one point, Guzan to Benteke was the most attempted pass in the league. He invariably wins the aerial duel, but successfully knocking the ball down to a team-mate is far more difficult and could easily skew his stats. In reality, Benteke is a perfectly adequate passer and often makes the kind of incisive forward passes that he himself would benefit from. With better players around him, he would excel.

"Benteke is just a target man": This is an idea again borne out of Lambert's limited tactics. Lambert never used a playmaker or #10. He preferred to bypass the midfield entirely when attacking. Our makeshift wingers - Agbonlahor and Weimann - were industrious and pacey, but not creative. He's a big lanky bastard (I use that term endearingly) and his aerial prowess encourages neutrals to relegate him to the Crouch/Carroll archetype. He is capable of playing that role but, for a big guy, he also shows remarkable close control, ball retention, dribbling skills and in general is pretty good with the ball at his feet.

I have compiled just some of his goals below. Villa clips are hard to come by, so the video quality is **** in some of them. Many of them are rather simple finishes too, but that's what makes him so brilliant. He's clinical.

Thanks for this insightful post. Having read it, I feel much more positive towards Benteke coming to Liverpool.

We'll have a Belgian contingent at the club now.

No idea what's going on there. Also, player that we wanted last summer and that in January we wanted to buy this summer, is now available, and we're not interested. What's changed? Bad blood between the two?

Wonder what @donga darko would say if he went to Everton?

The Balotelli gamble appears to have ****ed us. Surely for £15m Shaqiri ISN'T a gamble? And Konywhatsit? Yet we pay £20m for an unknown winger that Maureen had knocked back at half the price six months before... :emoticon-0145-shake

Shaquri, Illaramendi and the Plank are all players who's stars have dimmed, two years ago they were all in demand and expected to draw large fees from top clubs yet now very few seem interested. I can only assume they have not lived up to their billing.

Newcastle manager Steve McClaren has played down reports linking Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli, 24, with a move to the Tyneside club. (Daily Star)
Sevilla have reportedly won the race to sign Dnipro star Yevhen Konoplyanka.
The 25-year-old has been linked with a move to England, with Liverpool and Spurs both interested.
But, after Carlos Bacca agreed a deal to join AC Milan, Sevilla have swooped for the Ukraine international, according to The Express.
A statement on their official website read: "Sevilla have reached an agreement with the player, in the absence of a medical and closing a deal with Dnipro."

Well he is out of contract. What deal is needed with dnipro????

Earlier it was that sevilla would not pay the wages.

God only knows with that one.

Please please please newcastle get desperate. Please bid... please

That could be a good deal for all involved <ok>

Yes evans is a two footed diver inner who's a cheat and not very good at all. And Coleman can't defend.

No seriously evans is a shakey player who's not in the class Utd need for their ambitions same as brown or o'shea. The days of carrying them as you had plenty are gone. Utd need a top cb

Coleman is a good strong runner but I don't think his final ball is consistent and I don't think he's any better than the dreaded glen Johnson when defending personally.

However he'd be a massive improvement on utds current state of play. ... just like Clyne is a massive improvement on us having nothing.

He must be relieved <ok>

I think he will be. All rumours were he was homesick and not really pushing as he was never given a go after his initial run and rodgers had plenty of need. Basically if downing is given 2nd and 3rd shots this kid could have if he'd shown up.

I've been discounting him for a good while.

No substitute for hard work, playing first and parking the rewards as they automatically follow and leaving the agents out of it.

Konoplyanka did ok but has been on a free from 6 months and no takers... the wages must be astronomical.... he wants real or barca money I'd say.

Shaqiri did turn us down on an 18 Mil bid. He choose to stay at bayern. Then he decided to go for the Italian money and low taxes and everything on a plate. I have to wonder about attitude there.

Again it is why I wonder about Montoya too... it's obvious you are a hanger on at barca and not moving makes him look bad.

Illaramende I cannot really say. I don't know enough.

This is why I say good for all, as far as I know Everton have no real back up for Stones and Jags so Evans could be very useful for them.
