I used to notice his lack of jumping. He was never a great jumper, but his timing was usually spot on. His debut England goal had power, timing, accuracy AND jumping. Makes you wonder.

Thanks for the reminder of RL`s England debut !. In his last season for Saints, he was on his heels a lot. Not many of the far post/diagonal headers as we had been used to.

As Archers and Greensaint said, Lambert was never going to fit the Liverpool formation which makes his purchase more surprising. I think our side still lacks goals next year unless we can add a prolific midfielder or striker.

    Rickie Lambert. Legend.

Born in Liverpool, made in Southampton.

    Enough said :)

Amazing lack of actual Saints-based transfer rumourage around at the moment? The calm before a transfer storm? Or are Clyne and Schneiderlin now such a big media story that they've sucked all other gossip into a big black hole?

I don't think they were targeting Lambert. They wanted Lallana and Lovren. I get the feeling we kind of pitched the idea to them.

It was kind of no-lose for them. Lambert cost them essentially nothing, and was never more than useful depth for them. A backup player who is still relatively decent and does not mind being a backup and is fairly cheap is not that easy to find, even for Liverpool. It was a good way for Lambert to see out the rest of his career. And it was one way we could jettison Lambert and not have a fan revolt, otherwise we could have been in a sticky situation putting a club legend on the bench.

From a certain perspective you could say that they were not going to get the most out of Lambert, but then that is probably the case with whoever Rodgers got. No worse than Balotelli or Borini. They just didn't know what they were doing last year. Still might not.

Really, it was a good move for everyone. Even for Lambert, if Liverpool wasn't the best place for him as a player at least he got a bite of the apple and played some European competition, and a chance to play for his boyhood club. I agree with what Archers said that if Lambert hadn't at least taken a crack at it, he would have regretted it.

If RL had had the opportunity to stay here, play every game, and maybe even be team captain then I think he might have stayed. But we couldn't guarantee that to him either, and I think he himself might have suspected his body was no longer up to the task. It was a good way for him to see out his career.

Even now, I suspect that Liverpool is not losing any sleep over having bought Lambert and would be fine with it if he wanted to stay. I would certainly take him back at Saints. But I think if he's going anywhere it will be to get some first team football and give it one last hurrah, and Liverpool is happy to honor those wishes.

Interesting point is how patient would fans have been with Pelle (in his dry spell) if a club hero like Lambert was on the bench. I suspect even Ron would have rested him for a bit. Not knocking Pelle...I think he will be great this year, but SRL's presence would have put pressure on him probably at a time that he needed support.

Another way of looking at it would be that we were able to field a player more likely to get us a result at that time. Even with his curtailed leap, I'm pretty certain SRL would have won us a few extra points last year.

I'm putting it down to the reporter putting an easy, lazy, link together between Cabaye and Pardew in relation to their Newcastle days.

Bigger clubs than Palace would take Cabaye. And where would Palace get the money from to pay his wages (whilst keeping the rest of their squad happy at the same time)?
