Liberty Stadium expansion would cost £15 milllion - Huw Jenkins

EXPANDING the Liberty Stadium to meet the clamber for Premier League tickets could cost Swansea City around £15m.

Chairman Huw Jenkins has confirmed increasing the capacity of the Liberty by around 10,000 seats would set the club back in the region of £15m, around a third of the original cost of the build.

Swansea have been looking into the possibility of making the Liberty bigger after selling out all 16,000 season tickets in record time for their debut campaign in the Premier League.

At just 20,500 the Swans have the second lowest capacity stadium in the Premier League and only 2,000 tickets are available on general sale for each game next season.

With the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea coming to South Wales supporters have been desperate to get their hands on tickets.

Jenkins said: “As supporters would expect we are looking at every option open to us and that includes expansion of the stadium.

“Everything of course depends on next season and being able to retain our status as a Premier League club.

“That is the first priority and if we can stay in the Premier League we will look at what we can do to push on.”

Swansea’s average home attendance was just over 15,000 last season but they have seen unprecedented demand for tickets since gaining promotion to the top flight.

Fans queued for up to 24 hours to get their hands on the final remaining season tickets in the wake of their play-off final win over Reading.

It is understood any expansion and building work Swansea wanted to do next summer would have to be signed off by January so it is unlikely the club will push ahead with any plans this season before survival is secured.

But if Brendan Rodgers can make Swansea a regular Premier League fixture the plans are becoming clearer about what it would take to improve the Liberty.

Jenkins added: “I must stress at the moment that we are just looking at the options.

“Before anything can be done there would have to be total agreement between all the partners in the Liberty Stadium, ourselves, the Ospreys and Swansea Council.”

Still looking at the options since 5th july 2011....<laugh> same today as it was then and nothing...<ok>

Yes we know what was said in 2011 , and we didn't meet the criteria until I believe 2013 as the club put certain conditions in place before they proceeded further. Then there were a number of objections on the planning side of things that had to be sorted.

This is not extension on a house, commercial applications take an awful long time to sort out. Now the intentions at the club is to purchase the stadium as well.

I think Dai we will have to see who is right in about 6 months, we will come back to this discussion then.

That's not what Huw Jenkins said in his interview in fact the opposite. Stated that the deal to buy was close and that the expansion plans will be implemented soon afterwards in fact early part of next year. 6,000 extra seats in the first phase.

Well it's not fiction Dai as there's planning applications for this on the Swansea Council website. Why would the club spend thousands on that if they were not going ahead? You have to ask why would the board spend money on this if they were not serious.

You keep saying this is rubbish etc, but I think you are going to have a lot of egg on your face when this goes ahead, what will be your answer if everything mooted is done?

Why would i have egg on my face ? they have already said that The plans have had to be cut to 6,000......I ask how long are they going to keep on saying we are going to have an extension before actually doing it...All i hear is hot air and no action......why is that do you think ? Are the locals, the big stores and the police stopping any progress i wonder ? How are they going to do the extension anyway? All our stands roofs where they plan to put it slope upwards and have to come down for a start we will ether have to move and ground share as there is no way on this earth any extension can be built between seasons. Health and safety will cut our attendance by half if we stay there......No we are being fed bullshit it aint going to happen as its too costly both building it and lost revenue that if it was to go ahead it would have started by now.....

Dai how do you know it's not going to happen, as you said in one of you're previous posts relating to Michu that only the club knows what's going on. Why is not going to happen, is Huw lying. With regard to the reduction to 6000 seats that was always the plan, there are to be three or four stages to the expansion the 6000 refers to stage one.
