What is old these days? Some people seem really well at 80 and others can barely move at 50. One thing is for certain, I'm not retiring at 68! In my profession, the average age of death for a retiring male is... 63!
This is a brilliant, fascinating and rather terrifying infographic/video about the human cost of WW2. Please give it a few minutes, it's worth your time and it's quite astonishing.

Why would any Tory support grants for the disgusting poor? Shame my Green party vote wasn't given the 20 million bonus points I was hoping forLol at student types who voted for the Tories and deserted the Liberal Democrats on the basis of tuition fees.

The Tories didn't promise to eliminate fees and treble them, but I take your point. I'm one of those poorer students!Lol at student types who voted for the Tories and deserted the Liberal Democrats on the basis of tuition fees.

What profession, Spaced? I've heard that statistic trotted out for dozens and dozens of jobs.

Teaching. The stat was given to us when we trained (ten years ago) by the Uni - so I guess there is some truth in it. Anyway, no one wants an old teacher. They can't control classes anymore, don't keep up with modern teaching ideas... and they fall asleep at the desk!Quite enjoyed the job ten years ago - but not a respected profession anymore.
I agree entirely about teachers, they represent hope for the future and should be paid 5 times more than they are. I do know, however, from various friends who have been teachers, just how stressful a job it is. But there is life after teaching: one friend who took early retirement has just finished an art degree, and spends her time making the local area beautiful with installation pieces. Another guy, the former head at my daughter's junior school, is now Station Master at Castle Cary station and looking forward to his busiest week of the year, welcoming the Glasto hordes. So yes, respect for teachers, but they should allowed to retire at 55 if they wish, and live their dreams. You ought to listen to Radio 4's More or Less on the subject - you've been misled. Basically every profession has been fed the same "retire and die" line at some point. If you give it five minutes' thought, you'll realise it simply can't be true. That was on a while ago. However, more recently, they covered the jobs that made people the happiest. You may be surprised to find that teaching was very high in the list. I'm only on here briefly but I'll try to find a link after the weekend.
Stay happy; some of us greatly respect teachers. I value education more highly than almost any other aspect of life, so you have my unconditional love and support.

Glad to hear so much support for my teacher "crew"!
I think teacher happiness is dropping and entry to the profession seems down. Hard to get good young teachers at the moment, all our teacher "perks" have been stripped or are being stripped, and government keep referring to us as child minders rather than educators. Schools are not there to babysit for you while you earn cash. We are educators. Please stop with the stuff about looking after kids from 8-6!!! I'll stop there. I have so many rants!
