Not Racing I know but in the European Championship Qualifiers Romania are a massive price at 7/5 to win away at Northern Ireland. Unbeaten group leaders with only one goal conceded and a comfortable 2-0 win at home against the same opposition. I think the UK bookie chaps have jumped on the NI bandwagon and significantly under-rated the Romanians.

If you want another dark horse for the euro games then Armenia to beat Portugal is another one. Portugal have been horrific in qualifying so far and Ronaldo does not get the supply he needs from them. Armenia have some v good players like Mikahartyan and could be another 'surprise' result.

With the miserable weather forecast for the Yorkshire area on Saturday – unless you like rain all day – I think I can already see the York card being a total no bet.

How much of the rain hits Sandown later on Friday may determine whether there is anything to bet on at all on Saturday, which is a shame as there are some decent looking races at the Esher track.

I live next to Sandown QM, we've had a short sharp shower and are due one or two more later but nothing like we expected earlier today and will not (so far) have made any difference I think...I'll keep you posted

Worth a punt on, Bari in the last at Sandown. A horse from a family I follow, she is by the sire of the moment Cape Cross and won a 12f apprentices handicap at Newbury a month ago in a pleasing if unconventional style but still looked a touch green. Looks like she'll appreciate 14f and Crowley back in the Hollingsworth colours sould be a plus. An each way prospect at least I'd think.

Here in East Yorkshire it has been raining (not heavily) since about 10pm on Friday so I would not listen to that clown at York racecourse that was on The Morning Line, it will be on the slow side of good.

Applying my standard York rules to their card this afternoon eliminates all the races on the round course as there are no standout candidates that I think will win no matter how the race is run. In the big three-year-old sprint at 3:45, I think that Twilight Son will win but will not be getting involved at around the 5/1 mark as he has been raised 11lb for his easy win more than a month ago so he will need to be group class today.

I expect the non runners at Sandown are the result of the failure of rain to show up so the ground is quick.

The opener at Sandown is packed with three-year-old maiden winners so is best just watched with the notebook at hand as it will probably turn out to be a good source of future winners. In the second, I will be watching to see how Basem runs as he is a full brother to Farhh and they have not kept him in training as an entire for nothing.

In the five furlong Scurry Stakes, any enthusiasm for Profitable is tempered by his Listed race penalty for his latest win, so I will give another chance to course-and-distance winner WAADY, who was a huge disappointment last time over six. Easy maiden race winner Likely could be anything but I will chance it as he is not race fit.

York 3:45 - Scalzo 4/1. In his 2 starts this year he's more or less embarrassed his opponents with how easy he has won, and I expect more to come. Now under the ownership of Sheikh Hamdan, and I'm not at all surprised one of these big owners has bought him, he's been so impressive. I got 4/1 yesterday which I was amazed at, almost certain to go off at much shorter I'd have thought. He's actually been raised 18lbs from his last win, I still don't think it's enough to stop him.

I also like Demora (10/1) for the big sprint at Musselburgh. She won the same race last year but hasn't won again since, she has been in a lot of hot sprints though. Back on a workable mark today, and jockey Tom Marquand is great value for his 7lb claim. These big sprint handicaps can be an absolute lottery but would expect a good showing from Demora.
