Tottenham have given the biggest indication yet that they are prepared to sell Luka Modric by making a £12.3million offer for Real Madrid midfielder Esteban Granero.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy continues to insist that his Croatia playmaker will not join Chelsea but the bid for Granero raises doubts because the Spaniard is considered a ready-made replacement for Modric.

Granero, 24, is an attacking midfielder with many of the same qualities as Modric - especially his close dribbling ability - but first-team opportunities were limited to just eight starts in 19 league appearances under Jose Mourinho last season.

Selling the former Getafe man to Tottenham would mean a profit of £8m for Real.

Liverpool and Arsenal have also been looking at Granero, nicknamed the Pirate because of his rugged looks, but are not willing to match Spurs' offer.

Madrid seem likely to accept the bid but there is still some distance between the two clubs' valuations of Granero's team-mate Lassana Diarra.

The former Chelsea, Arsenal and Portsmouth midfielder is moving on in search of first-team football and has not joined his club's pre-season tour of America.

Real want £17.5m for the France star but may be forced to accept Tottenham's offer of £14m, made earlier this summer, or negotiate a double deal.

Seems a reasonable price if true, I imagine VDV has had words with Harry about the player. I think this spells out the departure of Kranjcar unfortunately, never been given a real chance. With regards to Diarra, he's a quality player I'd be delighted for us to sign, only issue is clearing our books of the dead wood if we were to bid again.

the press still don't get it ,because were looking at another midfield player we're selling Modric, not strenghning the team

How many more "big indications" do these morons need before the message gets through? Of course, it's the Fail, the Russian Gangsters' partner in the original little scam to nick Modric on the cheap.

It's a little surprising the Mail is not complaining about the fact that he is foreign.

The Daily Mail read by scared little Englanders.

Actually I get the impression the Mail is mostly read by the far left given the amount of knowledge they seem to have on it and the amount of complaints about it

What's a this talk about the Left Colonel! We don't exist anymore.

The Mail is a vile paper and whatever your political views that should be accepted. CG, as a mod, are you planning to promote your political views at every opportunity?

I'm not promoting anything, and there has been nothing to suggest I am doing so

I just find it curious that people that supposedly hate a paper read it anyway

Complete garbage. Clubs look at players all the time. You don't get anywhere by standing still. Even with a player of Bale's ability we're probably still looking at left midfielders around the world. That's how you evolve. We won't be signing him, i'm certain. The only midfielder that might possibly come is Scott Parker, especially given Sandro is now injured for the start of the campaign. Our priority will be strikers although most marquee type forwards are off the market or out of our wage range. We can afford most fees but we won't get anyone we really want as they just won't accept anything below £100,000, especially as the UK tax bracket takes half of that.

They gave him a lot of game time last season, considering the strength of their midfield so I think they rate him and are unlikely to sell.

I hate The Fail, and I can assure you, I do NOT read the ghastly rag. It's nothing more than a middle class rabble rouser.
