I heard something on RH a while ago about elephants which used to be walked from Ferensway down to where Zoological is now, and there was some story about one elephant ending up stuck in a shop after smelling ginger and sticking its head in. Since then I noticed there's loads of slabs in the pavement on Spring Bank which depict the story. It looks completely daft without knowing the back story, but very Hull.
I found this

I remember my mother telling me how my uncle was a display manager at Thornton's. One day he designed a window display mainly using the colour mauve, That night there was a fire at the store, how widespread i don't know, but my family were all deeply superstitious and they blamed the colour scheme. (Don't ask me why, they just did. Superstition isn't always based on logic). After that my mother would allow nothing mauve into the house. Cadbury's chocolate used to have a mauve wrapper; if she ever bought any Cadbury's she would even discard the wrapper before she brought it into the house.

If I remember right it was called "Mayfair" and had a very unique taste which I couldn't try to define. It was sort of cinnamon mixed with something else but I absolutely loved it. I made inquiries about it on my trips back to Hull as I bought some and it tasted nothing like the original. I even wrote to Cadbury's but got no reply.

All Cadbury's chocolate comes in a mauve/purple wrapper.

Yes, I know mate but when this chocolate bar came out it was called "Mayfair" and it had this beautiful taste to it but I have no idea what it was. I have asked around but have had no luck. The last time I was in Hull (1990's) they had this bar on sale but it just tasted like ordinary chocolate. I would love to find out what the hell was in it.

According to the list of all Cadbury's products, Mayfair was the name of a box of chocolates, it's not listed as ever being a bar.

I've searched all the manufacturers Cadbury's, Fry's, Nestles and bugger if I can find it but I will persevere.
Talking about Chocolates, we have a very popular product here called Vegemite (similar to Marmite) and some genius thought it would be a good idea to put it inside a Chocolate bar. We bought one out of curiosity and, although I have never tasted cat s h i t I would imagine that this is what it tastes like.
Stay right away from it!

I remember the Aztec bar, it was manufactured to take on the Mars bar - despite being quite tasty I recall it was only available for a year or so.

I can remember going to the new Cecil just after it opened to see Davy Crockett and the wild frontier.
My parents took me to see it as well John. They had a guy on in the interval doing tricks with a yo yo I think it was at the same film.
My parents used to go into city centre every now and again on a Saturday. As we lived out of town we used to go to Thornton Varley's for our dinner, happy days.:emoticon-0100-smile
