I have read a lot of arguments about money spent by clubs and their final league positions. and they go like this: we spend the 5th biggest amount so our rightful place is 5th i.e outside the CL places. So it seems to me then that the only way to buck that trend is to 1) buy astutely (not necessarily raw or young or potential) - older players, frees etc) and 2) get a really good manager and pay him even over the odds. That way we hope to get a squad and a team that will OVERPERFORM over expectations and get us into CL.

To hope to outspend the Mancs, Chelsea City or even Arsenal on a CONSISTENT basis is cloud cuckoo land. It is simply not going to happen. That is why we needed a better than average manager.

I don't expect our owners to match City, Chelsea or Utd £ for £ and Wenger's plan at his club makes Arsenal more prudent when spending, but the current policy at LFC of buying young cheap players will never work, there's enough scope financially to spend to our max now that ffp is getting backheeled and that's our only way forward until we stabilise a position in the top 4.
If that's not our owners aim then its 5th and the Europa League or no European football from now on.

The best managers are the ones who get the most out of their resources. Just because we're 5th highest spending team does not mean we settle for 5th. Juventus have a lower wage bill than us and are in the final. Dortmund haev a significantly lower wage bill to Bayern but won the title twice.

Rodgers has been given a lot of money and he wanted the Soton lads. He bough a LCB which we didn't need because we had Sakho, and an AM which we didn't need because we had Coutinho.

He spent £45m on 2 players in positions which weren't required. He should have bought a defender and a DM, and if done astutely, he could have got a striker for the same amount.

Quite frankly - do not give him any control over transfers and FORCE him to work with resources he's given. That's what top coaches do. They don't b*tch and cry and play political games in public about lack of spending etc etc.

I think buying young players and waiting for them to come good is our only hope really.

4 clubs get their pick of the top players / first choice targets then we pick up the scraps when they're done.
That won't change for the foreseeable future.

If you're going to criticise Rodgers for the players we signed then you also have to credit him for the players he wanted. We're just not a big enough draw to attract them.

So we need to gamble earlier and tolerate a lot more flops. Lots of flops. Lots and lots of them. Because once a player comes good, we're no longer in contention to sign them. They'll pick the current top4 sides every single time no matter who our manager is or how much wages we offer.

We're basically Spurs with a better history now.

That's fine, just not at £20 million!! Like Markovich.. no one cares that Borini, Alberto, Aspas, Yesil etc have been huge flops because all were under £10million. Occasionally you get one right (Coutinho)

And unless that one is Suarez or someone as good he won't be able to make silk purses out of a lot of sow's ears like the Uruguayan did in his final season.

I think buying young talented players is a good strategy. Can, Coutinho, Sakho, Sturridge are good examples of buying wisely.

Even Moreno and Markovic have a lot of ability if played and coached correctly.

It was players like Lallana, Lovren, Mario (he was used poorly), Gerrard, johnson who let us down this season.

Players between 22-25 should be what we're aiming for as the 'experienced' members. Get these players in before they hit their prime or get noticed by the bigger clubs.

Congrats to Rafa for getting his dream job. Not saying I wanted him back but he's certainly far better than Rodgers.

Rafa was sacked after 1 poor season finishing 7th. Rodgers is a very lucky man.

Different owners. H&G hated Rafa (and Rafa hated H&G) so the one season was the excuse they needed.

    Rodgers is FSG's yes man.

We could really use a Gary Mac while we wait for the kids to come good.
