BBH You don't know his wife was fine or any of the facts about his wife. All you have done is read some tabloid and believed it. These were actually his words:

Although his time with us was destined to be a complete failure (why oh why did TF sanction this move by HR) I feel a great deal of sympathy for someone who has lost his life-partner - I know what devastation this would cause in my own household - so I hope he bounces back into some form of either management or punditry.
BBH, your lack of compassion does you no favours, no matter how you felt about him as a player, he has a life outwith of the football arena, as do we all, and as said above, I hope you never need to rely on the support of others, as Rio has had to do.

It's remarkable how brave some people are when sat behind a keyboard posting things they wouldn't have the balls to say to others faces.......your comments are totally callus and tasteless....yes he should have retired last summer but HR & TF were at fault then. ..but that doesn't excuse your comments.
In the circumstances we believe that a ban is appropriate and we have requested the super mods put it in place as soon as possible.

Not that it makes any difference in terms of basic human decency, but Rio's wife had been diagnosed with breat cancer, and been treated for it, over a year ago, well before he joined QPR. It was thought she had beaten it and was in remission, but clearly not. Her rapid decline in March was a surprise and must have been, and continue to be, very traumatic to all those close to her.
Diagnosed isn't the same as being ill....maybe she was suffering by being sick, lethargic and any other amount of symptoms which he had to deal with prior to her diagnosis. No doubt she had the best medical help money can buy, but that still doesn't help someone who is terminally ill. I hope and pray (even though I don't believe in any higher being) that all you who are slating this man for having to deal with these extremely personal issues never have to deal with a situation that is anyway near similar and that your families live long, pure and prosperous lives.
Rio was one of the best defenders world wide of our time and I know he wanted to play with total commitment for us but couldn't focus properly on his game since just after he signed for us for reasons known. Family is more important than football, no matter how big a star you are. Nothing but respect and admiration for the man and would like to wish him and his family all the best for the future.
To play devil's advocate, maybe his wife's illness isn't an acceptable reason for such a loss in performance. Could you or I under-perform THAT much at work for so long under the same circumstances and get away with it (professionally I mean).

My parents have too, but I doubt it would have anywhere near the same impact as if my wife had, and I had to deal with the issues that that raises on a daily basis and still keep my mind on raising my family and providing an income for them by giving 100% at my place of work. Full credence to you if you can completely seperate your personal life from your professional life - to me family will ALWAYS be more important than any job, whether it be plumbing some ones bathroom, delivering someones mail or performing in front of thousands on a Saturday for a football team.
Yes, Rio should've retired at the end of last season, but to vilify him for the rapid decline of the health of his partner is wrong on all levels.
