Ali was backed by UEFA. If he's not pulling out then why will UEFA? By the way Ali is a t1t for not pulling out. A complete idiot. He was never going to win so it was an ideal opportunity for him to take advantage and isolate Blatter. Complete political fckwit <doh>

Ali has to stand, to give those who vote the opportunity to oust the ****er, otherwise he wins by default.
By pull out, I meant UEFA withdrawing (or threatening to) from FIFA completely, what kind of World Cup would they have without Europe?

There's no chance he'll win. Not a hope in hell. But that point is secondary. By pulling out, it would have left Blatter in a difficult position. Given the circumstances of yesterday's arrests, the whole stigma of corruption surrounding FIFA at the moment, Blatter being left alone in the election would have been a way of everyone distancing themselves from him. He would be isolated. Secondly, by Blatter continuing by default, it would have only reinforced the current climate of him being a dictator and the kingpin in all this corruption. At the very least it would have been immensely bad PR for Blatter. As it is though, by continuing with his bid Ali will simply be adding some respectable credibility to the whole process which is the real shame.

Fair point, I'd not thought of it from that angle.

He'd be left to virtually self anoint himself

Possibly should be more power within Fifa from the most powerful federation, with all due respect to small island nations in the pacific ocean, but how can they have as much of a say as a top footballing European nation for instance?

It's completely the wrong reaction if you're innocent. No-one else is saying how dare they do that, they're all saying thank goodness something's finally being done.

And why has it taken so long and been left to the Americans to sort this out?

Sepp Blatter has refused to resign as Fifa president following a request from Uefa chief Michel Platini.

The 79-year-old Swiss held an emergency meeting with key Fifa officials on Thursday after world football's governing body was subjected to yet more damaging corruption claims.

He then met Platini alone, at which point he was urged to quit.

Blatter is seeking a fifth term as president when he takes on Prince Ali bin al-Hussein in Friday's election.

Several influential football figures had called for the vote delayed after seven Fifa officials were arrested in Zurich on Wednesday.

But Uefa, which governs European football, decided on Thursday not to boycott the election and will continue to back Prince Ali.

Caf, which looks after the interests of Africa, has reiterated its backing for Blatter.

So has the Asian Football Confederation, although one of its members, the Australian football federation, has announced its intention to vote for Prince Ali.

Fifa was plunged into fresh crisis on Wednesday when United States authorities indicted 14 people and arrested seven senior football officials on bribery and racketeering charges.

In a separate development, Swiss officials opening criminal proceedings into the bidding process for the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bid processes.

Blatter's decision to chair an emergency meeting with representatives from Fifa's six confederations is significant.

    Such gatherings are rare.

It also took place without two of its nominated members.

Jeffrey Webb, president of the North, Central American and Caribbean Association, and Eugenio Figueredo, president of the South American confederation, were both absent after being arrested on Wednesday.

Blatter, who has been in power since 1998, was widely expected to win a fifth term as president before the current crisis engulfed Fifa.

But things are not so clear cut now.

He is understood to have widespread support among Fifa's 209 member associations, but Prince Ali, a Fifa vice-president from Jordan, could benefit from the latest crisis to his world football's governing body.

    Which sponsors are particularly upset?
Visa. It says it will "reassess" its sponsorship unless Fifa takes "swift and immediate steps" to address the latest accusations.
Coca-Cola, Adidas, Nike and McDonalds have also voiced concern.
John Whittingdale, Britain's Secretary of State for Culture Media and Sport, has urged all sponsors to "consider following Visa's lead".
It's fair to say that the loss of a high-profile sponsor would have a damaging impact on Fifa, both in terms of revenue and reputation.

The Shermans have only become involved due to a whistle blower who they cornered back in 2011 - Chuck Blazer, who was that bent ****er Warner's right hand man.

They've been working on the evidence for this case for 4 years and it's rumoured that Blazer had meetings with senior FIFA officials whilst wearing a wire.

He also had meetings with Putin btw..................

Sit back and enjoy this one mate, the Yanks are playing FIFA like a violin here.

Faced with the very real prospect of 10 years in a US slammer they'll be sqauwking like 2 day old chicks already, the greedy ****ers.

I'm certainly grateful for what the US is doing, and understand that these things take time. But people have basically known about FIFA for how many years? And absolutely no-one did anything about it (that we're aware of). Lack of jurisdiction? Scared of what will be turned up about themselves?

At least something finally seems to be happening. Let's hope it's a proper clean-out and revolution and not just some token charges with no real change.

No-one really gave a **** is the sad reality.

Remember when Qatar and Russia were announced and the English FA, media and even Govt were up in arms, screaming about corruption and even provided evidence of it.

What did most of the rest of the World do? **** all. In fact they shrugged and said it was sour grapes from the English for being beaten by the Russians. Even some of our nearest and dearest *waves at sisu* came out with that line.

Corruption and fairness aren't viewed in the same way around the globe, a few FIFA bods taking a back hander isn't of real interest to the majority it appeared.

So the Yanks were gifted an opportunity in Blazer and driven by their own shafting as a fellow spurned bidder, decided to turn FIFA inside out.

The Shermans weren't being done by Qatar ffs <laugh>

  13. Blatter has given a press conference saying it's impossible to oversee everything that happens <laugh>

FBI have pages upon pages worth of evenhanded covering world chips from 2010 to 2022!

David Gill (Fifa Vice President) has just completely condemned Blatter on Sky Sports News.

Shockingly, Blatter looks like getting reelected with African and Asia backing him <doh>

If as it looks like he is reelected Platini said there's a chance Uefa could leave Fifa, the investigation isn't over yet ffs, what happens if he gets elected tomorrow and arrested on Saturday?

    Its a complete farce.<laugh>

Uruguay have jumped on the bandwagon and want Suarez international ban for biting overturned as he was the victim of a corrupt FIFA conspiracy.

"If Luis Suarez is in agreement," they began. "We will ask for the end of the suspension... due to [the player] having been suspended by an organ suspected of corruption."

"It doesn't matter that the clubs have withdrawn their complaints because of external pressures, it is time to unite and fight so that justice is done with their funds and the Suarez sanction.

"He was a victim, without doubt, of this alleged corruption."

Cue all livpl fans joining this insane campaign for justice lol. I see some more t-shirts being printed <whistle>
