The games you've lost this season, you've not been unlucky and missed hatfuls of chances imo. You've just been either been beaten by a better side or been defensively frail. I don't think you've generally been much good this season, in fact, I think it shows how ****e the rest of us have been that you're sat in 5th tbh.
We've got 8 points from the last 8 games yet still in 5th. United lost 3 games in a row, but were still 4 points ahead of us. Point is we scored goals. A solid defence/mid would have seen those games out and we would have won.
IMO we have lacked goals but in general you are right tobes. we were way off the pace and if people had actually looked a tthe stats i did on season progress thread (which was mine for 2 years) and not focused on astro so much you'd see where we ****ed it up too. We were VERY lucky to get back up to 5th after a woeful season up to christmas.
excellent use of facts to prove a point. Our defense is weak at set pieces but its the lack of goals thats hurt us. most of our wins were narrowish.. we didn't exactly get hammered or hammer many sides. 2 goal margins mostly, barring utd away, arsenal away, city away... see the trend.. we beat only swansea and tottenham really well. 4-1 and 3-0 away. there were a couple of 3-2 gams in there but we generally had 1-0, 2-1, 2-0 type wins. In my opinion we never ever looked really sorted.
Yep. You basically had a very good 3 month spell which started just before Christmas when he changed to the 3-4-3 and no-one could figure it out. But in the last 5 weeks you've reverted back to the sort of form that saw you struggling like **** in the first half of the season.
jimmy you need a reality check on this 1 goal is enough and build from the back malarkey. We all know what a good team looks like and its called chelsea. you dominate teams when you can, you dig in when you need to, you defend well all the time and don't ever concede from set piece unless the delivery is world class... we let in a shed load. we were NEVER close. By 12 game sin we were mid table. we had a period of 12 games that were good form from christmas onwards.
If the whole league is so bad defensively.. Doesn't that just highlight even more how **** our attack has been and a half decent attack would have scored even more against these poor defences? i agree, great teams build from the back but Rodgers is not like Rafa or mourinho, he can't set up a team to score and defend a 1-0. So why try and compensate when instead could build an attacking team to out score and get better benefit from it
Fans are looking at last season as some sort of blueprint for success but I have the following concerns: a) To replicate the same success as last season, keeping the same sh*t defence and mid, then we need a quality player like Luis Suarez. We can't afford such player nor would want to come. b) In the unlikely event that we do secure such a player, we now have EL football to contend with. So we're already at a disadvantage and makes top 4 more difficult (compared to last season) c) We're now up against a stronger Chelsea, Arsenal and unfortunately, Man United (once they strengthen this summer). 4) Buying a striker will inevitably get you a few goals by default. What we need is to score goals as a result of a functional system. 5) Buying a striker simply masks the other issues in the squad. The same issues have been with us since 2009. If we're not going to fix them now, then when will we fix them?
my 70 point target (+/-3) has once again proved true. most utd can get is 72. And if anything the 40 point survival tally being actually good enough to put a side 14th right now whos that that points at the lower end have not exacly been flowing in. that means there is a glut of points right in the middle of the table and everyone is beating everyone. if this were last year our 62 points would only get us 8th... 5th is an ego boost, our performances this year was been poor, our eyes should be able to tell us that.
all jimmy needs to do is go look a tthe champions league.. the WHOLE english contingent were destroyed in europe as they are ALL weak defensively. 20 changes in a game 10 on target stats etc etc... its just end to end stuff and in the end I agree with IBWT. our attack is woeful
this sort off attitude is what burnely tried... oh we'll never get a good striker.. lets put 10 men back?
Good point but again, we have scored goals against these defences. If we had the same attack as last season, then yeah we would have annihilated them. But ultimately - why would we need to score more against them? Scoring 1 is technically enough. It feels as if fans think we're not scoring any goals at all. Last season created an unhealthy emphasis on goals, goals and more goals. Re. Rodgers - you're right, it's not his strength. And it's why he won't be a success at a big club, and it's why we need to get rid of him.
We haven't though that's the point. Gerrez posted the stats, our goals scored are atrocious for a team looking at top 4 in comparison to our rivals whistle our defence is 4 or 5 goals worse off. Technically 1 goal is enough but no one is going to go win 38 games 1-0 so you have to be realistic and say we're going to concede 38 goals this year so we need to be able to score nearly double that
Jimmy have you considered the fact that teams played deeper when our attack was lethal and thus were confident enough to push up when we lost both Sturridge and Suarez. The biggest problem I find with your logic is that defending is that it must come from the back. I'd rather Rodgers buys players willing to press and harass from the front rather than wait for the ball to get to the back line only for one player (see moreno) to balls it up due to lack of concentration. What you want is a Mourinho type coach and try as he might Rodgers will never be that.
Defending from the front is key, but have a back line who are competent goes a long way. And I'm not saying we need to have 10 men behind the ball. It's about having structure, a defence which holds its line, leaving minimal space between one another. The real basics of defending. And going back to SAS last season - yes, we defended from the front and we pinned them back but we still ended up conceding 50 goals last season. We simply need a coach who understands how to coach a defence. Look at all of the best managers in the history of the game - all understood the importance of building from the back.
Wrong, you are simply thinking thats what others are doing when in reality, none of us are expecting 100 goals a season!
