Listened now thanks. I thought Nigel came across really well, very passionate and you can see how he motivates people initially... There was a moment when he lost his thought and it did make me wonder if that ever happened with Saints. There was talk of some of the dressing room beginning to be lost.
Top man though.
Although he was beginning to turn things round, it may have just reached the point where Adkins could take us no further. Not a reflection on him, but the team had heard it before and needed new ideas. They would also be aware that he had lost Cortese. An ex-player said recently that footballers are fickle....they get over change very quickly and tend to be only interested in how things affect them.
Also they aren't the brightest group of people in the world and could see a manager loosing them if he was being too clever
Stuart Pearce said a couple of days ago that you wouldn't believe the stuff a manager had to deal with....touched on by Adkins in this broadcast. Pearce said you go into work with all your plans for the day laid out and then get met at the door by a player and agent wanting a word. Players are so spoilt and expect a manager and/or the club to sort out everything in their lives. No wonder Nigel thought he needed a course in psychology.
Just listened to it all as didn't catch everything last night, and I must say it was a terrific listen. The format of these shows are much better I think, when you can get a person with real insight, real engagement, and real inteligence to articulate himself. He was always a good talker, and I really hope somebody takes a chance on him again, as he really does deserve it from what he has achieved, and how dedicated he is to the job.
Thank you DTLW for the transcript of the Nigel Adkins interview, that was very helpful. Adkins is a top man and still so popular with us Saints fans. Hope that he secures a good management job again and that it goes well for him.
I say Adkins deserves a shot at a decent club. Could he have been successful in the Premier League with Saints? I think so.
I find it interesting that some 'journalists' suggest that Ron is lucky to have inherited good players and a style of play from Pochettino. In fact Pochettino was the lucky one with what he inherited from Adkins. I'll not deny that he improved us, but the style of play was essentially the same.

Funnily enough, I see bigger differences between Pochettino's style and both Adkins' and Koeman's. Pochettino's style was to press and press until exhausted. At its best it was highly exciting and dangerous. At its worst an opposition could eventually run through. Adkins' style was to press intelligently, same as Koeman's, but with players of lesser quality. This could be maintained almost throughout the match. What let Adkins down was the intelligence and quality of his squad, and possibly the quality of his coaching [that possibility can't be ignored, the same with all coaches and coaching]. Koeman certainly has a stronger squad of players who are fitter, stronger, smarter and more skilful and can press when required for an entire match. He also has higher quality match winners at his disposal. Match winners take the strain off a team, as we all know.
However, it shouldn't be a surprise that all Liebherr era Saints managers have a similar way of playing [even Pardew's Lge One team pressed the ball] because it is The Southampton Way of playing these days. Koeman has introduced the latest iteration of this way.
Think Wigan would be a great fit for Adkins despite the mes they have made for themselves. Adkins has played for them before and has experience of success in L1 and the championship.
I think journalists have given Koeman praise as they keep mentioning the fact that we lost so many players. The only person to suggest Ron is lucky is Pochettino himself. He actually told a foreign journalists that he laughs when people praise Koeman as he considers that he did all the work. Seriously crap.
Would seem Chamberlain is on the verge of employing the services of Sterling's agent, a guy called Aidy Ward who also represents Berahino!!!

I think that clubs might well take who the players agent is into consideration when looking to buy.
Would we want a player managed by Ward when he will constantly manoeuvring behind the scenes to boost (his) the players earnings rather than the footballing part of the business?

Could be. You still need someone to implement it though. He wasn't exactly a major success at Charlton.
Either way, Adkins deserves a shot at a decent job.
