I am not saying an attacker could just be put in defence and play to a world class level immediately. What I'm saying is if they where coached to play defence then they would have the talent to play it. Where as I don't believe the best defensive players if coached could ever play to a high class level in attack.

The most naturally talented players would never be coached to play defence to a world class level, as their ability would be wasted playing there.

Gareth Bale is a prime example of this, he could of obviously played to a world class level at left back, but once they realised how good he was, he was moved forward into a position where he could put his talent to better use.

This is the reason attacking players go for a lot more money, as the more talented players play in attack. It is far easier to replace a defender in your team, as there are plenty of decent defenders out there. But it isn't so easy to replace a Ronaldo or a Messi type player

I have not said anyone could play there. What I have said is that the best attacking players are far more talented than the best defensive players.

I realise the top defenders in world football are still highly skilled players regardless. But certain areas of the football field require more talent to play than others:biggrin:

I thought 3-0 was a pretty tough result for Bayern, overall. Not forgetting that Lewandowski missed a sitter in the first half, their defence played really well until the 77th minute, with Neuer making some world-class saves with his long legs and feet. Then they just seem to crumble. The second of Messi's goals was just pure magic. Bayern must now climb "The North Face of the Matterhorn" on Tuesday. That German goalkeeper of Barca, Marc-André ter Stegen, is one cool customer. Surely his country's No.2 now? Thought Suarez had a poor game by his standards?

I wasn't impressed with Lewandowski at all. Missing that golden chance in the 1st half was criminal, and then everything that went forward to him came back very quickly.

I don't understand why Bayern panicked so much once they conceded either. A 1-0 loss would have been retrievable at home, but a 3-0 loss gives them a huge mountain to climb. If Barca score in the Allianz the tie is as good as over, if it isn't already.

I think you also have to question Peps tactics, as I think you have to adapt when you are playing against a front 3 like what Barca have. You need to adopt a more counter attacking defensive system, particularly away from home. You don't take them on punch for punch and leave them with loads of open space to run into. I know Guardiola has his philosophy, but without the pace and skill of Robben and Ribery to trouble Barca at the other end, his tactics where naive.

He's almost as bad as Arsene Wenger, only knowing how to play one way, and despite having most of the German World Cup winning side to choose from he's been hammered twice now in CL semi finals.

Bayern under Jup Heynckes where a far tougher team to beat

Absolutely. Watch it again, only this time don't look at Messi, look at Boateng. He doesn't know what to do and just falls over backwards, made to look like a complete arse.

Good morning all, about to leave for polling (oh no! another flashback of 'Lewa' miss) station.

Even managed to listen to Talksport phone in which I failed to do after Real Madrid and Chelsea losses. This suggests that I half expected last night's result and 'game'. To be third or fourth best team in Europe at this time is no shame. We were beaten by 'a' (not 'the') better team and, as at this level home or away is not important, we will probably lose in a similiar manner next week.

Hopefully no panic in Bavaria and Guardiola stays and builds his own team (sorry about cliche). Only alternative is Klopp!!!

Over the full ninety minutes a three goal defeat was about right.

SH - as an honorary Bavarian I would suggest going to the final would be to climb the Zugspitze in the first half followed by the Watzmann family in the second half!!

Looking on the bright side (?) I have probably saved about £1000 on a 'bender' with 'rest and recreation' visits thrown in.

To close, cannot wait for my visit to Koln in July; Kolsch and Mr Daniel's here i come!!!

Now off to 'Bayernzone' site to listen to the worldwide nonsense from my fellow FC Bayern aficionados.

Oh and QM; any thoughts on very recent Sterling weakness against Euro (wrong site)?

You can't get away with that kind of statement. Attackers make mistakes and they miss a goal, defenders make mistakes and there's a goal scored against you.
Going back a few years I know but the Brazil side of 1970 was magnificent but England could easily have beaten them. Why because a certain player called Bobby Moore near on played their attack on his own. At the end of the game Pele raced to Moore and wanted his shirt. I've not seen a performance to compare.

Yep, Oddy, I did look at Boateng too, oh dear! To be fair, there are quite a few so-called top class defenders who would have been made an arse of with that move of Messi's. God, some player!

Let's just say for arguments sake that Bobby Moore was the best defender of his generation, even though he probably wasn't. Would you say he had more talent than the best attacking players, the likes of Pele, Eusebio and Best?

Can't blame the defender, what is he supposed to do if he's left 1v1 and Messi turns on his weak foot:biggrin:

Would Pele, Eusebio or Best be able to tackle like Moore?
Moore was also a very good captain - which none of the above were!!

Just received my 'rebated' Council Tax statement from the authorities in Nurnberg!!!

Before my mother went into the care home my 'plan' was to use my inheritance (house sale) to buy a studio appartment in Mittenwald. I had already listed my details with a local agent and was sent information of suitable properties coming on the market. I was looking forward to creating a second home where I could waken up with the Karwendel as my morning view! Discovered Mittenwald on a train trip from Seefeld en Tirol. The lack of our compatriots in Mittenwald made it 'heaven on earth'. I had visions of me reaching seventy odd strolling about with a smallish dug probably named after one of many favourite FC Bayern footballers - Breitner, Kaiser come to mind. If it was a 'bitch' Steffie (G) or Heidi (K) would have been considered.

    Ho - hum!!

If they where coached to play defence then I'm sure all 3 could to a very high level. There is no way the likes of Bobby Moore could have ever played in attack, no matter how much coaching.

Bobby Charlton was the best and most skilled player in that England team. There is no doubt about that!
