So esteemed football writer Martin Samuel has today got involved in the Jack Grealish England or Ireland debate.

Samuel declares there should be no choice and Grealish has to play for England as he has a brummie accent and was born in England. His ancestry should only come into it if like Andy Townsend he reached 25 without an England cap then he could play for Ireland.

He also wants Ireland to stop scouting players who can qualify for Ireland and only scout Irish born players.

Hmm, John Barnes, Owen Hargreaves, and Raheem Sterling off the top of my head.

Back to Grealish hes been capped by Ireland u16 and u19 and should continue with Ireland but ultimately its his decision.

My view on this is quite strong

The lad should decide via what is in his heart

If he feels irish and has played all irish underage levels he should play ireland

If he wants to add 20k per week to his wages and be a HG player for his entire career he should play once for england.

Seriously if the hack should go to brum and and walk round and see how many different nationalities would lynch the ****er for being a wasp...... being born in little england and being white seems to mean you have to play for england but i doubt a different ethnic background would get this kind of stuff...

I think sherwood put it best when he was talking about what he said to benteleb.

Ask the the kid of he's irish or english and depending what he says, tell him to stick with that

Samuel writes
That was partly through his grandparents on his father's side and also because the Irish employ a scout called Mark O'Toole, whose job it is to sweep up the best young players qualified to play for Ireland. That's not the same as sweeping up the best young Irish players.

I think we have scouts also looking for Irish players in Ireland too Martin <doh>

Kind of ironic as England scoured the commonwealth for athletes, can't find his articles about disagreeing with that.

How else would they win anything otherwise <whistle>

But that's the historically inherited English way of thinking isn't it, that they own anything and everything that the empire or colonials touched once, hundreds of years ago. If you look at an image of the earth there aren't any borders or lines drawn on it, and no names printed on the different territories and land masses.

True/

What is pathetic about Samuel is he claims he is upset for Irish league players who miss out due to Ireland scoutng England for players with Irish ancestry.
What he really means is he is pissed that a pretty decent player, who prob won't make the England senior side, will be playing for Ireland u20 and u21 teams.
