5.00 Newbury Knightly Escapade 8/1 NAP

In 2 of his last 3 runs he has gone pretty well finishing 2nd at York off a mark of 75, and then 3rd off a mark of 77 again at York. Both runs on good to firm going(the same as it will be tomorrow). The handicapper has strangely lowered him a pound for finishing 3rd so he's off 76, a mark that he looks handicapped to win off. He's got a nice draw 4 of 14 so will hopefully get a nice position and save ground on the rails. His regular rider hasn't been booked, they have booked champion jockey Richard Hughes, which is a big positive to his chances. So I'm expecting he will be ready to put in a bold showing tomorrow.

3.25 Newbury Capel Path 6/1 NB

This Sir Micheal Stoute trained horse had a slow start to his career as a 2yo, but pulled off a fairly decent maiden victory in his 3rd start at Newcastle winning by 4 lengths on good to firm going. The 2nd in that race went on and bolted up next time out by 3 and a half, so I fancy the form is pretty strong. He has a nice pedigree, from Street Cry and a half brother to a group 2 winner. So I'm expecting a lot more from him at 3. And with Ryan Moore in the saddle there isn't a better pilot for the job. So I'm hopeful he can do the business :biggrin:

This was one of the meetings I always liked to attend. They've messed a little with it but it's still a good day's racing (the Fred Darling always used to be on this day). I was going to say I expected Stoute to have his first winner of the season today but he sneaked one in in the last yesterday. I was also going to say that I think Capel Path will win today but KS has beaten me to it.

The Queen usually pops in to this meeting and her Ring of Truth may add to her excitement. Looking at the rest of the card Ryan has some fascinating rides besides Capel Path. Gosden runs (Ryan rides) Kingman's three-parts sister Multilingual in the 3yo debutant's race, he also rides Charlton's Ooty Hill who looked smart first time out last year, in the last he rides Midday's full-sister Shoal and even in the first rides a nicely bred daughter of the Yorkshire Oaks winner Quiff.

DIFFERENT GRAVEY ... Runs Today in 13:25 Ayr . .. When I met the forums favourite trainer @ a Cheltenham preview night he was very effusive about this horse ..@4/5 we are hardly going to retire but it would be a nice one for the acca's ... Where is SBC when I need him ?
 
Anyone know what Sir Micheal Stoutes record has been with debutants lately? As now Bustino has mentioned it I kind of like the look of Shoal. I don't normally bet debutants but 3/1 looks a good price for a full clone of Midday:biggrin:
 
Anyone think that Newmarket was desperately disappointing this week?

Newbury has some interesting looking maidens and other races so I'll have a small play.

2.50 Star Of Seville 9/2 showed promise with a debut 3rd at Leicester over 7f (2nd won since and winner entered up in the 2000 Guineas), before demolishing rivals at Doncaster over 1m at the end of the season. Two things were clear- this is a horse who is a real galloper and has stamina a plenty, and the step up from 7f to 1m in softer conditions brought out that strength to the tune of a 6L victory over DREAMLIKE. Dreamlike has won a Lingfield maiden since, beating a horse who has won a Chelmsford maiden since. There were some well bred sorts in behind Star Of Seville at Doncaster and with the decent looking form of the 2nd, I get the impression that the 3rd-8th placed horses might also add depth to that form in time.

The step up in trip to 10f is a masive positive, as is a galloping Newbury track. The yard won this with Western Hymn last year and hopefully Star Of Seville can add his name to the Gosden winners roster.

5.30 Forever Popular 3/1 sees Richard Hughes booked for debut and the short price and double Group1 entry suggests that this might be a nice one. The sister to Midday (SHOAL) should ensure prices remain fair in the book but as Stoute tends to bring them on slowly, and she lacks any big entries, you would think today is about learning for her so the eyecatching booking of Hughes looks like Haggas unleashing a smart type.

Haggas last 4 runners form is 2211, so hopefully he is due to start the season well.

Of the rest, I thought most intriguing was Thaqaffa (2.20) for Marcus Tregoning, as he seems quite happy with his bunch of 2 year olds this season, with this ones resale price almost twice the amount, and liked Hughie Morrisons Star Rider (1.50), as we have that interesting mix of Cape Cross and Sadlers Wells bloodline (Cape Cross sire out of a Galileo (son of Sadlers Wells & Urban Sea) mare. There was a horse once called Sea The Stars who was decent, who had a similar bloodline, right?!

Don't know if it was disappointing, or just an early season meeting where some horses had improved or others just weren't ready!

I guess I meant from the perspective of hoping to see a horse that grabbed your attention and looked something like a classic or future classic winner.
 
Massive gamble seems to have taken place on Tony Martin trained Dollar and a Dream in 1605 TIPPERARY. As big as 7's this morning, now 2's in some places...

He should win but hasn’t got that much in hand on official figures when you bear in mind Different Garvey is conceding 4 lbs to the Longsdon and Greatrex runners. Although I think Different Gravey the most likely winner today would I take odds-on about him at this time of the season (when so many animals are ‘over the top’)??? No. Next season he is another of Mr Henderson’s set to go novice chasing. A sphere he should excel in.

One of Mr Henderson’s I wouldn’t want to miss today though, although perhaps because I’m such a sentimental fool rather than anything else, is MINSTREL ROYAL in the lucky last at Fonters (4.20). This half-brother to Heather Royal and the legendary Barbers Shop didn’t exactly uphold the family tradition first time up. However, he displayed signs of greenness that day and also pulled way, way too hard. Sure to have since been given the benefit of Mr Henderson’s great brain and ‘magic hands’ expect a much better performance later on this afternoon.

I may be getting mixed up with this one but a few months ago I think this one was backed from 20/1 into as short as 3/1 and ran like a drain. Someone else commented on it that day here too so I'm sure they will confirm if it was Dollar and Dream.

Nice one Oddy ... no comment to make on the innards of one of the forums' favourites !!! .. anyway Different Gravey lands he odds well.... will definitely be jumping a fence next year ...
