I wasn't suggesting that we shouldn't try and eradicate some of the blatant cheating that goes on in the game, just that the more marginal "gamesmanship" will be virtually impossible to remove, as it's ingrained.

You can't glue the ball to your boot but it would be a tad unsportsmanlike to disallow the winner what what!

Absolutely. We need to look at the scale and the seriousness of the offense. Clear racist chanting against a black player = point (s) deducted. There could be things like first warning etc. Until these idiotic "fans" realise that their despicable actions (which they must think is hilarious but not so if you are the victim) will affect their club they will keep doing it. What's to stop these train idiots to do it again next time they are in Europe?

I said earlier that I think it's probably impossible to change now. I just mean that we should continue to call it and not just accept that it's "part of the game".

Do you think there's a difference with incidents inside and outside the stadium? Clubs can't police their fans wherever they happen to be.

saint I think the diving and cheating is 'relatively' new - it's almost the pay off for having imported talent. Can you remember diving [as we know it now] before we had the influx of foreign players?

  12. Agree with this (<yikes>) but the blatant cheating can be dealt with. Players get booked for kicking the ball away already for example. A player should get booked when they dive too. Why can't retrospective punishment be issued for blatant diving? Obviously there is the 'contact' debate but the ones with clear daylight between the player are undebatable.

I remember Greavsie had trouble staying on his feet as well but they didn't have one eye on the penalty spot when they went down..... did they?

In an ideal world yes. Its anything but though and allowing that to happen encourages the offender to go in harder and the ref to wave play on.

Wild and wreckless challenges are a bigger problem than cheating of any kind. You can end a career or cause serious damage and get a 3 match ban.

Its unfortunate refs are incapble of calling a wreckless challenge without help though.

I think UEFA will need to have some cojones. If they are clearly Chelsea fans (which they are and no one has even doubted that) then the club must be warned that they could lose point next time. If it does happen again, then there should be a points deduction or in KO stages playing behind closed doors or a points deduction for the next time they are in the league sort of thing.

Seems unfair on the club but drastic measures are needed for such incidents if we are really serious about stopping them..

  16. So its for the player to decide what is danger and/or reskless now...? How come we still have referees...?

I've got a better idea. Why can't the 5th official or a 6th one on the stands be watching the game on a monitor and in a matter of seconds he could tell the ref that the incident wasn't a pen it was a dive and the appropriate action could be dished out suring the game. The problem with retrospective action is that it doesn't stop the cheat propering on the day, as his action could result in a win for his team. If he gets punished afterwards he's merely 'taking one for the team'.......

They need to get it right on the day <ok>

Tbf its no wonder they evaded tackles back then, defenders wore clogs with walnut studs and shinnies were only made of horsehair and reinforced cardboard.

    Ouch!!!!!

  20. Well, that's a whole different conversation <laugh> Would it slow the game? What if the other team scores in the mean time? How would you control the aggrieved spectators...? I'm not disagreeing with you as you make good points, implementing it so quickly would be the issue.
