And that is why it's not about Rooney. A year ago he would have done the same for Gerrard and before that Terry. In fact the whole media punditry will show double standards towards the big name English players...going all the way back to Owen against Argentina iirc.

Impossible I know, but I'd like to see cheating eradicated from the game- regardless of the perpetrator. The justification of it because "winning at all costs is acceptable", really pisses me off, tbh.

He was probably in a state of stunned disbelief. One of those situations were later on you go over it in your mind as to what you should have done <ok>

In fact it's one of the big reasons I hate watching CL on ITV. Andy Townsend is the biggest bias prick at it. Even last night. Although tbf he has a genuine dislike of United so that could also be why I cant stand the knob <laugh>

All teams do it but I'm resigned to the fact pandora's box is well and truly opened when it comes to diving.

The other problem is what is diving? There are so many interpretations. Most associate with conning the ref when no foul is committed to gain an unfair advantage. But it's not as simple as that. It's easy to suggest, lets red card them and they'll soon stop. But most rational ppl are saying that regardless of Rooney's theatrics, the pen was a fair decision so he wouldnt have got the red anyway. And in other scenarios a player may go down folliwing a foul bcos he knows if he doesnt he wont get the foul given. What do you do there? Like I said I think it's something that is out there now and I cant see it changing any time soon bcos it's not so simple to deal with.

The refs don't help themselves by failing to give fouls when the player stats on his feet. How many times do we see a player pulled back or clipped and the player stay up and lose the advantage wih nothing given.

Not all fouls are ones that make the player fall over. These are the ones that are the issue because the player has to go down themselves rather than actually be forced down and that can then look like a dive. They only do that as if they don't, no foul is given.

Players willing to cheat to gain an advantage will always be there. Most fans seem to not mind their own doing it or even deny they do it but are against opposition doing it. Double standards, surely not <laugh>

Is shirt pulling worse than or equal to diving? I played basketball and you were taught to hold the players vest so you knew where he was and he knew you were there which is accepted, what isn't accepted is keeping hold of a shirt and pulling the player back. Skrtel does it all the time but he's far from alone in that. Then there's a whole other category of sneaky cheats who combine that aspect of their game with stamping on a player or deliberately trying to injure a player - is that worse than diving?

Its not even a debate. Being taken out is worse than diving.

It's simple enough- you shouldn't go down unless it's impossible to stay up.
How often do you see a player get a tug on the shirt and suddenly their legs give way at the knees? That's cheating. It's a man's game, you should let the bastard rip the shirt off your back before you'd go down.
Of course refs can't see everything, and a lot of fouls would go unnoticed, but they would even themselves out between teams just as much as gaining advantage through diving does. And the ref's job would be a lot easier, and the game would be fairer, if he knew that if someone went down it was for a genuine reason.
I think most fans would prefer to see a game where hard but fair contact was allowed rather than watch people rolling around on the floor all the time.

    Ok.

Sterling through on goal and a giant of a keeper lunges at him uncontrollably and either:

    A. Takes him out causing a long term, possinly career ending injury

    B. Sterling dives out of the way

You decide and then we can close the debate.

According to UIR logic if we believe the Preston keeper we also condone the S*n's record on telling the truth, well that's what he's just said on another thread.

Wasn't nice of you to bring such things up tbh UIR and wasn't nice accusing me of associating with the S*n

You went in a completely wrong direction to prove a point mate.<ok>

That's not a debate, it's just an attempt to turn the tables.
    However, I'll answer.
He hurdles the keeper and lands on his feet. As I mentioned the other day, I did this all the time in the dinosaur era when I played.
Look at the pictures, Rooney only has to jump about a foot in the air to avoid the keeper, are you trying to suggest he can't get that far off the ground without his legs giving way on landing? I know he's a bit of a chub but still...... , he could have stayed on his feet and he should have.
No, he pushed the ball too far wide and lost the advantage, the keeper gave him a gilt-edged chance to make something of it and he took it.

Btw, Sterling has dived, and so have many other players of all teams. I condemn them all equally as long as they are all treated equally.

Lots of interesting points fellas. I still cant see it changing though. The watershed for us I'm sure was when Owen won that pen for England. Most of us were like "yeh have some of that, a bit of cummupance". I dunno, in an ideal world it wouldnt happen but it's not just that everybody does ot, it's the fact sometimes you need to do it to get the ref to see the foul.

Can we just blame those dirty foreigners and move on? <whistle>

  19. I'd go with:

C: continues normal strides, stays on feet and scores regardless of the reckless and very poor timed attempted challenge

    #11319
  20. Disagree. There was no need to hurdle the keeper. The keeper was that late he'd completely missed ball and player anyway.
