It's a story because it wasn't necessary to come to a halt ten yards away from the point of non-impact...

Thats a failing on the part of refs then.
Telling players to go down if someone slides in for a challenge and misses them is surely going to open a Pandora's Box of diving accusations and player bookings.

Oh, he jumped in the air from a standing start did he?

Here was me thinking he was running full pace when he jumped. Thanks for correcting me.

So are you saying his fall was intentional because the FA asked players to fall over even when contact isnt made or are you saying that the fall was accidental because he jumped from a running start? Cant be both.

most definitely a dive but not the worst I've seen. rooney could have skipped/jumped over the keeper and continued his run as the keeper was nowhere near him. no way you would get injured from that either, unless you're a bitch <doh>

No, I'm saying that the reason he landed ten yards away from where contact would have been made is because he was running.

Yeah - because he's sooooo quick and nimble. He exaggerated the fall to make getting the decision more certain. Again - I'm NOT saying it shouldn't have been a penalty. However, he did make a meal of the dive to the ground.

To be honest I think everyone is making a meal of the whole thing. To think livpl and chelsea fans are coming ob here and dedicating 3 pages to this when Gerrard and Drogba have both gone down with NO contact in the past. I couldnt give a tosd about their players, my point is simply that this is not the first time it's happened. It's been there since the days of Klinsman but somehow everytime it happens everyone gets their knickers in a twist...usually when other players do it, not our own <ok>

Do you know the really sad thing about this that's being missed, as a football fan and a purist, is if somehow Rooney could have stayed on his feet, the ball was still within reach, he could have slotted it in from a tight angle. Bloody hell I miss those days when strikers did that.

Yes. Congratulations, you have nailed one of the biggest issues in modern football, that being the inability of referees to make accurate decisions when challenges are made at speed.

It's a pretty **** state of affairs, but ultimately it's the reality of the modern game.

Considering he's sprinting into the box yes, he is quite quick.

I think this clip reflects more than a still, he hardly made any exaggeration at all, nor is he anywhere near ten yards away.

No chance of that - the ball was well outside the box and I doubt hew could have hurdled the keeper, stayed on his feet and still reached the ball with enough room to keep it in. He might have tried if it was in the area and only needed a touch to flick it in, but it would have needed him to turn and curl it back in from where it would have ended up.

Ah fair enough, I saw it live and then only saw one replay which was face on so it seemed like the ball was within his reach, although I knew the angle was tight. Didn't realise the ball was outside the area either.

Just watched it, he realises he's kicked the ball too hard and might not get to it, so he leaves his right leg dragging and then lets it collapse underneath him. The keepers rash challenge has given the ref no choice

Amazingly rich that the criticism for diving is coming from Chelski fans and that ABU Collimore, whose memory has clearly slipped regarding Stevie Me and the Sewer Rat.

Pot kettle and black seems to be the order of the day

Not really a criticism, at least not on my part anyway.
Anyone fan who tries to accuse another fans team of diving is a hypocrite.
For me its more putting straight the United fans who claim it wasn't a dive.

Fair enough. Depends what you class as a dive though. Which is it...

    1) Player is deliberately trying to con the ref when no foul is committed
    2) Player anticipates foul, moves to avoid and goes down
    3) Player is unfairly hindered from play while on the ball and goes down
    4) Player falls theatrically despite being fouled

The trouble is ppl like to equate the term to 1) which most ABU's would have you believe is what Rooney was doing. I'm happy to concede Rooney could well have been any of 2) 3) or 4). If that's diving then fair enough.

Its a shame so many football fans are unaware of the rules of the game. Not the complicated rules but the very basics of the game.

Offside. A player must be interfering with play or blocking the goalkeepers line of site.

A foul will be awarded if a challenge is deemed excessive or wreckless.

Too many fairweather fans these days. Hard to take them seriously.
