I have work with people who have been abused by their partners and many of them are in that situation because they have been abused all their lives. There's a lot of truth in this. Also, I think that there's a condition whereby the human mind sticks to what it knows - if you're not used to happiness then you almost avoid it for fear of not being fulfilled by it and almost crave sadness because it's safer emotionally (I don't think that makes as much sense as I'd like). It's symptomatic of deep depression, possibly trauma and is truly heart-breaking.
